The Admiral Is in Washington and ‘Will Be Asked to Exp! The Intelligence from Washington pub- Mshed to-day that President Cleveland and his Cabinet were angry at the state- ments made by Admiral Meade in an Interview here two days ago, and that there was a strong inclination to have him tried by court-martial, has caused a big stir in naval circie: Secretary Herbert regards the Admi- fal's interview as a savage attack on the Administration, and one that, if al- lowed to go unpunished, would tend to disorganized the entire navy. So indignant was he yesterday that soon as Admiral Meade's statements were shown to t1m by a subordinate, the Secretary of the Navy at once latd the whole matter before the Cabinet, which spent the entire day discussing what best to do under the circumstances, The Admiral will be asked first if the statements attributed to Aim are true, and if he admits it the court-martial, It Is sald, will certainly follow. ‘The Admiral, as already told in “The evening W orld,” has asked to be retired from the Department June 11, but the proposed court-martial might’ stop all that before that time he could be tried and sentenced, if found guilty, ‘Two paragraphs In particular credited to the Admiral, have caused the storm, One, Secretary Herbert regards as a personal reflection upon himself, other is an Insinuation that the C land Administration 1s un-American, The interview was given in response to the question why he wanted to be retired," and among other things he 1s alleged to have sald: My Ideas are not in accordance with those of the Administration. I am just as much disgusted with it as the pe pie at eee in this country are, and preferred to quit rather than con- tUnue my connection with it. I am an American and a Union man. Those are two things that this Administration cannot stand,” Secretary Herbert im an ex-Confederate soldier, and the Admiral's statement about being a Union man js taken as a direct slap at the head of the Depar ment. Further on in the interview, how- ever, the Admiral took another shot at the Democratic Administration. He sald: “1am a Republican, and a man who, ves on the ocean is apt to Invite pat-' jotism and loyalty. I find these articles Ata discount with the I want to ve untrammel. think and speak as I like, and to that end 1 will doft the gold jace and don the habiliments of a citizen who at least has the prerogative of standing up for his country’s honor.
