HE WAS KEPT IN IGNORANCE. When He Called at the Institution He Was Told He Could Not See Her. ‘The mystery surrounding the disap- pearance of pretty twenty-year-old Lis- sie Spiegel, wife of Simon Spi N, of 149 Spring street, from the woman's depart- ment of Ward's Island, where she was Datient, was partly explained to-day. Her husband who atill believes she met with foul play, says the officials ‘on the island retuse to give him any in- formation as to her whereabouts, or to Say whether she was on the island or not. It was admitted to-day that not only @id the woman leave the Island, but that she had escaped in a remarkable manner, It is the first case of a woman pri oner having escaped from that institu- tion in a number of years, and the Charities Commissioners are carefully investigating. Spiegel created a scene in the offices of the Commissioners of Charities and Cor- Fection to-day, where he went to de- mand his wife, She had been a patient on the island from October until last Thursday, MRS.
