NEW FIREBUCS Two Fires Started Above One IN HARLEM, Hundred and Twenty. fifth Street A BIG. APARTMENT-HOUSES, Amin the Columbus Avenue Di trict, the Motive Believed to Be Robbery. FLAMES WERE IN THE CELLARS. Residents of the Neighborhood Be- come Terror-Stricken—The Police Investigating. ‘The fire-bugs that have been operating on the upper west side have changed the field of their operations to north of One Hundred and Twenty-fifth street, and to-day the occupants of apartment- houses in that district are in @ state of excitement bordering on terror. ‘The incendiaries last night started two fires in large apartment-houses within a block of each other at One Hundred and Thirtleth street and Sev- enth avenue, The fires, it Is belleved, were started at the same time and by the same gang. The object of the tire- bugs, the police believe, is robbery, The two Seventh avenue fires weve @iscovered within twenty minutes of each other, and, fortunately were both extinguished without much damage, but not without causing the most intense excitement among the occupants of the buildings set on fire, The first fire discovered was in the five-story brick apartment-house, 215 Seventh avenue, in which seven familise live. The fire was discovered by KE. E. Van Zant, one of the occupants of the building. At 6.30 o'clock, Mr. Van Zant had oc- easion to go Into the basement to look for the junitress, He had no sooner reached the basement than he smelled smoke. He made an investigation, and found a jot of blazing paper and other rubbish in an ash barrel. ‘The fire had the appearance of having been started but a few moments before, With the assistance of some of the servants of the house, Mr. Van Zant extinguished the fire before the other tenants knew of it. It did not take long, however, for the news of the effort to burn the house to spread among the tenants. In a mo- ment all was excitement, which was increased by the noise and clatter of the approaching fire engines. It was discovered that the engines were not for the fire at No, 220%, for which no alarm had been turned in, but for a fire which had just been discovered in the basement of the St, James apart- ment-house, 219% Seventh avenue, only half a block away. The fire in the St. James, in which ten families live, waa discovered by Mra. iedna Shafer, who lives on the first floor, About 7 o'clock Miss Shafer ameled burning wood, and going into her dining- room, taw dense volumes of smoke Is- suing from the dumb waiter shaft, She ran out to the street and around the corner of One Hundred and Thirtieth street to the apartments of Janitor Wililam | Maitwood. ‘The janitor went at once into the basoment, where he found that a fire of waste paper had been started in One of the coalbins, from which the hasp of the 'uck had been torn. The fire was extinguished by Janitor Maltwood before the arrival of the firemen, When the firemen did arrive, Bat- talion Chief Short began an investiga. tion, and became convinced that both fires were of incendiary origin, and haw probably been started by the same Gilet short at once reported the mat ter to Capt. Thompson, of the West One Hundred and Twenty-fifth street police station, who at once detailed scv- gral men in <itizens) clothes to look for the fi yut_without success. neigh tn ‘To-da: ‘thompson has ten men citizens’ thes at work on the case.
