} WILDE'S TRIAL OPENS, ls Haggard sal used Oareworn the Dr matist Enters the Court. Taylor, His Companion, Sneeringly Indifferent in Manner. th: tify. The Boy Parker aud_ Young Variety Actor, | —— ~ LONDON, 1.—Crowds of people theréd ou! and ins» the Bow Police Court this m iing when ir Wilde and A! yior were Drought from the priso™ P, an early hour in @ Black Meria der to be examined, on remand, of [he charges ef having committed was = misde- meanors. The Court opened at 11 q'clock with both prisoners in the dock. Wilde Jooked haggard and worn, and it was moticed that she hes greatly changed wince he appeared on the witness stand ef the Old Bailey to prosecute his suit for libel against the Marquis of Queens- berry. Wilde was much more subdued, al-| though he smiled once or twice at cer- tain questions which were put to him. But he seemed to realize the gravity f the situation in which he found him- elf. He was dressed as faultlessly as ever, carrying @ shining silk hat in his hand and displaying on: his ungloved fingers many sparkling gems. Taylor, Wilde's fellow-prisoner, man who is charged with having acted &s procurer for the author and drama- tist, behaved in the same sneeringly in. different manner, and was evident! not as deeply impressed with the serl- usnens of the charge brought against him as Wilde. Sir Edward Clarke, formerly Solicli- tor-General, again appeared for Wilde, and two lawyers acted as counsel for Taylor. ‘The prisoners are evidently making a desperate fight. Their lawyers to-day Welayed the proceedings in every possible fway, and the examination of the ac- cused promises to be a ong affair. Tay- Jor's lawyer said that he would recall all of the witnesses who were examined on Saturday last, Taylor was not represented by counsel upon that oc- easion. Charles Parker, the nineteen-year-old ‘witness who was examined on Satur- Gay last, and who related at length on the! the stand, giving the most minute de-| who talls, his intimacy with Wilde, was again {placed in the witness box this morning. He was aubjected to cross-examination by Sir Edward Clarke, but hia testimony was not shaken. ‘The other witnesses of Saturday were not present in Court, but by consent of counsel for the prosecution, who prom- ised to produce them later on, the pro- ceedings were continued. Mr. C, F, Gill, who acted as prosecutor for the Treasury Department, and who, incidentally, was Mr. Edward M. Car- son's junior counsel in the defense of the Marquis of Queensberry, placed on the stand a man named Fred Atkins, twenty years of age, and described as @ variety singer. Atkins, in reply to questions put to him by Mr. Gill, sald that Wilde took him to Paris in 1893. Further testimony furnished by the same witness was im- {lar to that given by young men and boys who have been previousiy examined | in this extraordinary He added that Wilde gave him a silver cigarette case and money. Asked if he did any writing for Wilde, Atkins replied: “Yes, I wrote something about Woman of No Importance. Edward Shelly was the next witne: He sald that in 1801 he first became ac- quainted with Wilde. Shelly related how Wilde's attentions flattered him, and told how Wilde gave him copies of his works with tender in- scriptions, took him to theatres, to the Prince of Wales's Club and to other re- sorts. Shelly also testifled in detail as to Wilde's criminal behavior to him. ‘Then a number of disreputable lodg- ing-house keepers from Chelsea, th district of London in which Wilde’ home is situated, and several servants, testified to Wilde's visits to these houses in company with youths. The proprietor of the Hotel Albemarle was also examined. He testified that he became suspicious of Wilde, and finally issued a writ for a week's bill in order to prevent him from returning to that establishment. ‘Testimony was presented showing that the “relations which existe: Whae and Shelly were brought to" the attention of the latter's employers, an Shelly was discharg "Ktter the police had presented evi- dence concerning the arrests, Wilde and ‘Taylor were remanded for @ week, ball being refused.
