Mis Attempt to Use Force Fras- trated by Neighbors. Daniel McDonnell, of Fourteenth atreet, Jersey City, and his sister, Mrs, Anetta Garrett, of Hoboken, caused con- siderable excitement during the morning fession of Public School No, 13, which is altuated in the Lafayette section of the city, to-day by trying to abduct McDonnell's young daughter. The little girl, who is about six years of age, has been living with her grand- mother, Mrs, Phoebe Dimick, at 208 Johnson avenue, To-day McDonnell and Mrs, Garrett went to the school, ‘The child ts in Miss Nevin's department, and McDonnell asked for her, calling her Charlotte Goi-| den, the name she is known by. The| visitora were unable to recognize Char-| lotte, and when McDonnell sald he was the father of the girl Miss Nevins did not believe him, She became suspicious and declined to let the child go in the custody of McDonnell and Mrs. Garrett. Word sent to Mrs. Dimick and she hurried to the schoolroom, ‘The girl was taken by Mrs, Dimick through back door of the schoolhouse and she started with her for home. McDonnell and his sister soon learned that Charlotte was missing, and they set out wfter Mrs, Dimick. They over- took her near her house, and there McDonnell tried to take the child by force. Neighbors of Mrs, Dimick came to her assistance und succeeded in beat- ing off McDonnell, Nearly seven years ago McDonnell was sent to prison, Charlotte was born shortly after he was incarcerated, and this explains why he did not recognize her to-day, McDonnell was retensed from prison recently. After he had been in prison some thne his wife sued him for a divorce on the statutory grounds, obtained one, and was given the custody of Charlotte, She afterwards married Mr. Golden, A year ago Mrs, McDonnell dled and the child went to live with her grand- mother and step-father. MeDonnell is known as “Cue” MeDon- nell, owing to his fondness for billiards, A warrant for his arrest and for the arrest of his sister were sworn out on the charge of attempted abduction. =e A RECEIVER FOR MAUBECK.
