(Bpecial to The Evening World.) TRENTON, N. J., Feb. 14.—The legis- lative lobby had a genuine scare last evening. They have been doing their utmost, with success, since the opening of the session, to prevent the Committee from reporting the Two-Cent Ferry bill. ‘This act applies to New York and New Jersey ferries. ‘The Joint Committee on Commerce and Navigation considered thia bill in execu- tive session, and took a vote upon a mo- tion that the bill be reported, It was found that there wag a tle—three in favor of and three against reporting the bill, Two members of the Committee were absent, Those in favor of report- ing the bill were Senator Staats and Assemblymen C, A, Schober and Flem- Ing. It was this meeting of the joint com- mittee and the narrow escape of the Ferry bill from being reported which was so distressing to the members of the “ third house. Mr. Codding said the New Je Trap Rock Com- pany wanted to crush a rival company, and gave significance to his remarks by saying that a great deal of hard wor had been done on this bill, Mr, Usher wanted Mr. Codding to par- ticularige, and not leave the House to vote blindly on so important a bill. Mr. Zabriskie, of Bergen, defended the pill. He sald’ no lobby ‘had ever ap- prowched him on the subject, and added that the statement of Codding was out of order. Mr, Codding replied that he would vote for the bill, but wanted it understood that he knew the scope and breadth of {ts Intentions. Its good features, he said, predominated over its bad ones. Leader Storrs wanted the bill lald oyer, but after a brief conve tion with Mr.’ Codding withdrew his request. ‘There were only six votes against the passage of the bill.
