{ ‘ THE WORLD: WEDNESDAY EVENING, FEBRUARY 13, 1895) LA GASCOGNE’S BREAKDOWN, | It Was Caused by Water in the Bottom of the Cylin. der, Martin Says, 0 FLUN IN THE PISTON RD, There Was a Spare Piston on Board, but It Was Too Rough to Ship It HEAVY SEAS HELD HER CAPTIVE. Otherwise She Could Have Reeled Off 250 Miles as r Daily Run. A large force of mechanics are at work upon the broken machinery of the French liner Gascogne, at her dock at the foot of Morton street. They are under the supervision of Chief Engineer Martin, who said this morning that the repairs would be com- pleted in @ day or two. The big engine- room of the steamship was swarming with workmen, and heavy pieces of the machinery which must be removed in order to get at the central cylinder, which contains the broken piston-head, were piled up on every elde and screws and bolts were scattered about the floor. Chief Engineer Adolph Martin ex- plained more fully this morning just how the accident to the engine oc- curred, and its nature and what was done to overcome the difficulty. “I have come to the conclusion,” he sald, “that the breaking of the piston head was due to water in the bottom of the oylinde: Water will sometimes get in in spite of all that can be done to prevent it, and the tremendous force with which the piston descends will cause something to give way when it strikes the water. Either the cylinder head will be forced out or the piston must break. “In this case the piston broke, It was the same one which was used in the ol engines of La Gascogne, and though tt had formerly never been subjected to & pressure of more than twenty-five pounds to the square inch, {t had been tested up to forty-five pounds, and the pressure at the time of the accident ‘was forty pounds. “It was believed to be perfectly sound and was a part of the old machinery which was retained when the new quadruple expansion engines were re- cently put in. I do not think now the break could have been due fo any flaw in the metal. “As the cylinder the central one of the three irs necessary for securing the Lycee je expansion, it was th most important of all, and when it war rendered useless the’ only thing that could be done was to cut it off from the other two, which was accomplished by putting in joints at th eam pipes con- necting it with the others. “This reduced the engine from one of wadruple expansion to a triple expan- lon, and correspondingly diminished its power, besides putting a great deal of extra work on the connecting rods of the back pair of cylinders, which under ordinary circumstances do only half the work of the other two. “They were then compelled to do double work, and in the heavy seas which made the ship roll from side to side the irregular movement of the screw and shaft caused the bearings to become heated and this occasioned all the subsequent delays. "Had it not been for the heavy; ‘could easily have made weather milea a day for the remainder of the voyage ang there would have been no other jelay. selthie platon-head, which consists of two horizontal disks bolted together, was broken completely in two, the break feng. pinaat ‘@ Straight line across the diameter. “We had an ex piston on board, but it was impossible to replace the broken one with it while we were at sea, #0 _we had to do the best we could.’ Capt. Baudelon was ashore, as were most of his officers, ‘were superintending the discharging of the cargo, which was begun this morn- ing. Burser Japhet said that there were no rishable Roods; so far-as he knew, in ine cargo, and that everything had ‘ar Hyed in'good condition. Owing to her long delay on the voyage and the time that will be required to make the necessary repairs to her machinery Ia Gascogne will not sail in till next Wednesday, Her sched- ule date for sailing on the return trip was last Saturday. La Normandie sails to-day. and there will be no steamship of the French line Jeaving port next Saturday.
