WET MAY BE A HANDICAP, Beptember Meeting Not Relished by English Athletes, Mevertheless, a Very Strong Team Will Be Sent Over. LONDON, Feb. 7.—At the annual meeting of the London Athletic Club, the Chairman, Mr. J. B. Martin, con- Gratulated the members present on the @uccess of the Club during the past year, saying that in spite of the heavy expenses there had been a profit of £58, the best showing in many years, Referring to the proposition to send @ team to the United States, in order to meet a team of the New York Ath- letic Club, the Chairman said that the arrangements with the New York Ath- etic Club were not yet fully completed, but the meeting would probably be eld on Sept. 21. He feared that the heat would pre- vent the Englishmen, in several cases, from displaying their best form, but all of them were expected to, uphold the prestige of the Club. He added that it nad been decided that the con- test was to consist of eleven events, namely, a 100-yard dash, 200-yard dash, 40-yard run, half-mile run, mile run, three-mile run, a hurdle race, high jump, broad jump putting the weight and throwing the hammer, In regard to the two latter events, Chairman Martin said that the Ameri- cans have a system of their own, but he expected the Englishmen would soon be able to adapt themselves to these particular methods of putting the weight and throwing the hammer, and prove themselves equa! to their American com- petitors, The Chairman atso said that It was the special desire of the promoters of the international contest that the London Athietic Club should send the strongest Possible team to New York. This team will be confined exciusively to bona-fide members of the London Athietic Club, and will probably represent the full strength of that organization It ts \beileved here that the English team Wil: prove to be a most formidabie one. Mr. Martin, who {s connected with the banking house of Messrs. Martin & Co, of this city, was re-electea President of the London Athletic Club. The difference between the English and American system of putting the shot and throwing the hammer, fs that the Englishmen have the privilege of tak- ing a run, before the put or throw, in @ larger circle than the Americans use. ‘The latter put or throw from an eight foot circle, which does not allow the run, HORSEMAN W.
