ALBANY, Jan. 24—The Republican Benate of the New York Legislature is with Mayor Strong. It conceded to him to-day what the Republican Assembly refused to grant yesterday—an extension of time within which he 1s empowered to remove city officials. There was very little opposition to the motion to give the Mayor six months, instead of four. Boss Platt's men in the Assembly curtly refused the extension, and there was a sensation in the Senate to-day, when Senator Lexow, himself regarded @ stanch Platt man, moved to let the Mayor have what he wanted. And according to the reports circulated after the amendment had been offered, it was ordered by Mr. Platt himself. ‘The bill came up on general order for Amendments. Senator Lexow at onc offered the amendment to the first tion, extending the ume. It was the fame amendment offered by Tammany Leader Foley and defeated in the As- mbly ye rday. The Senator said in explanation of his amendment that Mayor Strong wanted the time extended to six months from four, ant would rather have the bill de- layed a few days in order that it might be. made as perfect as possible. Senator Cantor opposed the amendment in a general way on the ground that the Haver, could remove all the officials he | jeaired in. four months, ‘The amend- ment, however, was adopted on a party O'Connor offered another amendment confining the power of re- moval solely to the Mayor elected for a full term. Sehator Raines intimated that ho dia | not like the bill, but said he would vote for it because he was a Republican, Nearly half of the members of the As- sembty came over and filled the floor of the Senate chamber, and the galleries were thronged. When Senator O'Sulli- van, the one-armed representative of the Twelfth District, arose to attack the amendment, there was scarcely standing Toom. Jan. %4—Senator Lexow was among the early callers on the Gov- ernor this morning, and had a long and satisfactory conversation with him re- garding the three police bills embraced in his report of the Lexow Iinvestiga- | tion, It was reported yesterday that the Gov- ernof aws opposed to the bilis, as also to the Power of Removal bill passed by the Assembly yesterday. The Governor, ac- cording to the reports circulated, had expressed his disapproval of all four measures, and was quoted as saying that he would veto them. The ground of his opposition was stated to be the, unpopularity of the projected bill among the people of New York City. Senator Lexow told ‘The Evening World” reporter, nowever, that there was not the slightest foundation for such reports, The Governor, he sald, was not in any way owposed to measures that he, Senator Lexow, introduced. The Senator further declared that the Governor's alleged antagonism to the Power of Removal bill was equally un- rue.
