y | Dempeey-Ryan 16-Round Bout ig Attracts Most Attention. The “Nonpareil’s” Condition Gives Rise to Doubts. His Opponent Is in Fine Fettle for the Contest-Their Records. ‘To-night will be the first of the nearest Qpproach .o @ fistic carnival ever known @n Coney Island. The two-day card of the Seaside Athletic Club is suggestive almost of a Mardi-Gras carnival at New Orleans, not alone in the number of bouts scheduled, but in the prominence ef the contestants as well. ‘The programme to-night has for its feature the postponed battle of fifteen rounds between Tommy Ryan and Jack Dempeey. The rest of the entertainment will be made up of a ten-round bout between Jimmy Dime and Jerry Mar- shall, and an eight-round bout between Frank Patterson and Sammy Campbell. ‘The former is at catch weights, the latter at 123 pounds. Of course, most of the interest centres in the Dempsey-Ryan go. The former, ence the “Nonpareil,” whose career shows but one real defeat, will carry a large local following. Ryan's marvel- lous ability is well known by hearsay, but, aside from one battle, little known by observation in the East. Regarding Ryan's condition, nothing can be harsh- y criticised. He is fit to battle for his Ife, Although little has been said of Demp- sey's condition, it cannot be disguised that he fs not in the best of shape. This information has not been given out to the public, but it is known by “The Evening World” that Jack he: been under medical advice for throat and chest trouble during the past week, and that on Wednesday he was drink- ing whiskey, as he said, by order of Dr. Ward, his attending phystcian. W. K. Vanderbilt's Offer to Defray the Whole Cost Was Rejected. Yachtsmen all over town are jubilant over the formation of the syndicate to build a cup-defender, but in the midst of their enthusiasm they are asking the question, “Why was George Gould's of- fer to put up one-quarter of the cash refused ?”" ‘The general opinion was that Mr. Gould had been politely but firmly frozen out, and there were many reasons given for the action of the New York Yacht Club members. Asa matter of fact, Mr. Gould was not frozen out at all. The syndicate, composed of E. D. Morgan, W. K. Vanderbilt and ©, Oliver Iselin, was formed long before George Gould came out with his magnificent offer. Af soon as it became a surety that a race would be sailed for the America’s Cup this year, C, Oliver Iselin made preparations to form a@ syndicate. In company with E, D. Morgan, he broached the subject to W. K. Vanderbilt, “I'll build the whole yacht myself,” said Mr. Vanderbilt. The others demurred, however, and said that they were anxious to chip in and make up a syndicate, and to the trio settled the matter right on the spot, A few days after this syndicate had been formed George Gould made his offer to furnish ime-quarter of the cost World" reporter called in his office in the West- GPon Mion Hullding, this, morning’ and asked him what he thought of the new syndicate. “I think it is the most » thing 1 ever heard of,” wal Mr. Gould, enthusiastically, “Do you know of any reason why your rtamaniike THY WORLD): FRIDAY ‘EVENING: JANUARY 18 Bargains in Fine Tailoring.
