BUTTE, Mont., Jan. 16,—From seventy- five to one hundred persons, it is now es- timated, were killed by a powder ex- Plosion here lest night. The number of wounded 1s believed at this hour to be at least 150. At o'clock last night the Fire Department responded to a call from box 72, the call of death to nearly the entire Department. The fire was either in the store of Kenyon Connell, or the Butte Hardware Company's warehouse, ‘and both contained powder. There was @ rumor that there was powder .n the bulldings, and this reached the ears of the firemen as soon they Teached the scene, but it was denied, and after a moment's hesitation they Degan fighting the fire, At 10.08—the men had barely started to work—there was an explosion which shook Butte to its very foundation, ‘The powder in the warehouse blew up, spreading death and ruin to all who were near. It is belleved that in the first explosion only three firemen were killed. There were heroes among the specta- tors, however, and as soon as the stun of the shock passed away, while some ran in terror, many immediately began pulling the mutilated bodies of the fire- men and injured from the proximity of the flames. From al over the city peo- ple began moving towards the fire, and the crowd had greatly increased within five minutes. Just about that length of time after the first explosion, a second explosion almost equal in volume to the first heightened the terror all over the city and spread death ang desolation among scores of citizens. Parts of bodies were hurled hundreds of feet away. A man near the Northern Pacific water tank war almost struck by the leg and thigh of a human being, driven by the force of @ynamite from the fearful scene. There were still heroes left to help the shrieking wounded and the groan- ing. There had been two explo- sions and there might be more. Therc were rumors of carloads of powdgr in the vicinity, besides that stored in the ‘warehouses, Five minutes later a third explosion occurred, but it was a mild one, and it is believed that very few, if any, were injured by it, The disaster had all oc- curred in fifteen minutes, t most hor- rible quarter of an hour in Butte's his- tory. ‘The scene after the explosions resem- bled a field of battle more than anything else. The dead were strewn everywhere, and the cries and groans of the injured and dying presented a scene altogether unearthly, Blood and brains were spat- tered about. Legs and arms and pleces of flesh and entrails were scattered around. It was sickening. Between the ‘Northern Pacific and the Great Northern depots, a space of 300 feet, the ground was literal.y covered with parte of human beings, and with the dead and injured. ‘The scene was one of utter and deso- late destruction. Houses in the vicinity were badly wrecked, as if a cyclone had struck them. One of the rescuing \corps. gathered” twenty-seven dead bodies in one place. Eight were in Another, Two and three were in groups ‘here and there, The rescuers pulled Still quivering bodies from the debris, the mutiated beings still groaning while legs and arms had been torn off. (Spectal to The Evening World.) ALBANY, Jan. 16.—Boss Platt left town this morning at 9 o'clock and both houses of his Legislature got down to work at 11, or at least began to talk abcut work at that hour. The Asembly Committee on Rules re- ported a compromise resolution provid- ing that that body hold sessions on al- ternate Saturdays, beginning Feb. 18. ‘The introduction of the resolution pre- cipitated an acrimonious debate con- cerning the work to be done during the in which the proposed reform were threshed over from a partisan standpoint. In the Senate the question of Mayor Strong's representative or spokesman in the Legislature came up during a discussion over the reference of com- mittees of bills affecting New York City. Senators Lexow and Cantor indulged in a spirited harangue over the matter, and Senator Lexow sprang into the breach as the first desigated spokesman of the Mayor. The subject of the Mayor's represen- tative Is agitating the members of both Committees on Cities, to which all pro- posed New York City legislation is re- ferred. During the discussion in the Senate, this morning, Senator Lexow, in reply to a question from Mr. Canto: Seventy. Chairman O'Grady, of the Assembly he Evening World” correspondent that the uncer- tainty as to the identity of the Mayor's spokesmen in the Assembly was causing Committee on Cities, told @ good deal of annoyance. “L wish that the Mayor,” he said, ‘would let us know the name or names of the Republican Assemblymen from New York who are officially authorized to speak for him, There are seventeen Republican Assemblymen from New York, and almost every one of them the Mayor has approved measures relating to New York City claims thi thi pave been introduced, Mayor's preference as to his repre: that he enjoys that distinction. “I wish ‘you would i attention to the matter.” Chairman O'Grady introduced in the Assembly a bill providing that the May- ors of all second and third class cities shall fix a day upon which public hear- ings shall be held to discuss special laws introduced in the Legislature and relat- ing to such cities, Such hearings shall be advertised, and the Mayor shail certity to the Legisluture at the conclusion of them whether or not his city desires the bill to become a law, ‘A bill providing for such hearings in first-class cities was introduced last week. Senator Robertson, of Peekskill, to- day introduced a bili appointing a ‘com- mission to preserve the historic, scenic and picturesque points of interest and landmarks in the Btate.
