DUE TO THE RAIN, That the Streets Are So Muoh Cleaner All Over the City. The Plies of wai Lisl Found It fearing. Very Plenty of Men Are Being Hired To- Day at 62 Per Head. Last night's rain-storm did more to remove the filth, dirt and slush from the streets of New York than in Commiasioner Andrews's depart- ment have been able to accomplish in the last two week: There was a steady downpour, which began late yesterday afternoon and con-! tinued nearly all the night. It melted down the great heaps of snow and ice | which had blocked the uptown streets | and accumulated dirt and rubbish of all kinds. Rivers of muddy water ran into the sewers, carrying away their long accu- ™mulations, and this morning the effect of the drenching was seen in the cleaner appearange of the streets. The main thoroughfares looked respectable for the first time since Christmas week. Farmer Dunn promises a continuance of warmer weather, and perhaps more showers, whicn wil do much to aid in the work of atreet cleaning, which eeems to have taken @ new start since Mayor Strong's taik with Commissioner An- drews and bis associates yesterday. ‘The advertisements which appeared in all the newspapers this morning, calling for an extre force of 2,000 men to clean the streets, and promising them two or three daye’ work, met with an eager re- sponse. It was directed that the appli- cants for work in the Street-Cleaning Department should all provide them- Selves with @now shovels, and it was stated that applicants would be received at the rain office of the Department in the Cptminal Court Building, or at any ‘one of the nine stables which are located in various parts of the city up along ye cast and west side wi Full ner of "clock door of the ‘Street-Cleanii at the cor- waiting for the aster’s office of the artment to be opened. The break in the younger branch of the Astor family 1s one which may perhaps never be bridged over and when the funeral of Mrs. William Waldorf Astor takes place to-morrow at Trinity Chapel, | in West Twenty-tfth street, it is almost certain that neither John Jacob Astor nor any member of his family will be present.
