They tell you now that the city manager plan, as_ introduced here, is a fake. The stand-pat Times, mouth- piece of the antis, tells you edi- torially that “The Times itself would be for the city manager tomorrow, plan if it was genuine.’”’ How ber, there different from the editorial stake: earlier in the campaign, before resuscitation tactics were needed, when the Times told you: “The city manager plan of- fers no hope or chance for im- provement in city government.” Do you suppose that managers of other cities would come to Se- attle to speak in favor of a “fake” manager plan? Opponents give you a long list of “candidates” who will seek the city manager’s job, includ- ing Councilman Beb Hesketh, C. B. Fitzgerald, republican boss, and others. Another sample of the pure, unadulterated “bunk” that opponents are feolish enough to think the voters will swallew. They would make you believe the city manager is given un- checked authority over the entire city treasury. More “bunk!” More than 300 city managers are directing the operations of cities Say this against it, me!” ager It’s properly. BLAINE! Look! The Star has no quarrel with those good, citizens have led them to oppose the city manager plan. these citizens would place it. But lined up solidiy against this plan for efficiency in city government ‘you will find the “city hall machine,” ‘ Tammany Hall in trying to force its selfish desires voters. Shoulder to shoulder with “the gang,” the lawless element of the city is bat- tling tooth and nail, and spending its ill-gotten gains, vent the entree of a city manager whose job would be good only so long as he — enforced the laws and put an end to graft. In any election where the vote is light, it is a simple matter for “the ma-.. chine” to be effective. For “the machine” DRIV polls to do the bidding of its masters. thus play directly into the hands of the machine by piling up the majority when the votes are counted. Indolence of the voters has been responsible for permitting “gang poli- tics” to get a strangle hold in Seattle. So impregnable has it become, and so far-reaching are its ramifications today that, The Star believes, the only way to break up the system—the only way to tear loose this ‘Old Man of the Sea” from our necks—is to elect a city manager. And the only way we can do that is by getting out and voting him in. That will be YOUR job. “The gang” is on the other side. Be sure YOU are at the pells Tuesday! | Q. Who was Zeus? me * A.
