ATTLI TAR | \ | Elect Paul and Phillips! 66) OUNTY RING” or clean government in the courthouse? That's the issue, as The Star sees it, in the county com- missioner priniaries. For nomination, in this instance, means election. : This paper believes that the time has come when the ‘ma- chine,” which has had its tentacles wound into county affairs and county coffers for too many years, should be kicked out. It believes King county wants clean and efficient county gov- ernment, and that this election will provide an entering wedge for breaking up the old state of affairs. RANK PAUL, present commissioner from the south district, is pledged to such a clean up. Paul ran on that platform at the last election, and on several occasions made attempts to start a house cleaning. But as a mi- nority member of the board, he was outvoted. The Star believes Paul is sincere in his efforts. It believes Paul is entitled to a chance to prove his sincerity. It urges his re-election, to give him that chance. “Sue HE situation in the north district is a peculiar one. Citizens west of Lake Washington are up in arms for a commissioner representing their side of the lake. They point out that for more than 20 years north district commissioners have been elected from east of the lake, and that the west side has been discriminated against in roads and other necessities. Three candidates are outstanding in the north district race: William Brown, mayor of Redmond; Frank Kannair, secretary of the Retail Grocers’ association, and H. J. Members of the county “machine” make no secret of the fact that they are working tooth and nail for Brown’s election. And that, in The Star’s opinion, eliminates Brown. OTH Phillips and Kannair are pledged to clean up at the courthouse. But they are in a situation that obviously is impossible. Strategy of the “machine” has been to keep both men in the race, in the belief that they would so split the north district vote that Brown would have a walkaway. North-siders, in the interest of good government, must not let this occur. They must choose between Phillips and Kannair. The Star recommends Phillips.
