WASH., WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27, 1924 * I Seattle Minister Files Charges Sakinr IMPEACH MAYO THIEVES LOOT APARTMENTS HERE! —" ~ = = “The False Alarm” ittle Fireman Writes This Story to Show Children Its Danger The Ferry Menace (EDITORIAL) HAT’S Seattle going to do about the ferry busi- ness on Elliott bay. Unless some provision is made to more adequately care for the increasing traffic to and from the other shores, a tragedy—horrible to contemplate will be the price of our neglect. Developing from a comparatively small bit of freight hauling a few years back, the ferry traffic during the past two summers has grown to a stu- pendous business, It will continue to expartd as Se- attle does and as Bainbridge island and the mainlgnd attract new farmers and city folk who go there to spend the summer and, in many instances, to live the year round. The lack of proper facilities first asserted itself as an inconvenience, People scowled a little as they were made to line up and wait in Western ave. with- out proper direction or system. And when the ferry companies, flushed with the income from the new business, began herding their patrons in like sheep and packing them there like sardines, the scowls and the growls turned into real protests. And for a very good reason. Not a Sunday passes but that nearly every ferry operating between Seattle and the ports across the Automobiles are jammed in so thick their occupants cannot get out of them. Last Sunday evening a Ford car with a man and-his wife and six children was hemmed~in alongside the boiler room on “one ferry: cape in case of an explosion, a crash or any other one of several possible catastrophes, would have been impossible. Larger ferries, adequate places for them to land, proper waiting facilities—these are needed before another summer arrives. The Port of Seattle could accomplish no more worthwhile public service right now than to plan a ferry building for joint use and the steamboat inspectors MUST see to it that the practice of overloading is stopped NOW. “Now, youll never pull a false alarm, H. Stephens, fireman-author of No. and N. 39th st., will you?” ~9 station, Linden ave. as he tells William Edgar Roaf, one of his small chums, how dangerous it is to “*have fun’ by sending in fake calls to the department. “No, I should say not, says Bill, after hearing the story that Stephens has written - for all the children who read The Star. sir, WO Ci EATTLE, to COUNCIL TO HE Minister Declares Brown Defies Law; Asks Impeachment of City Executive A TEEARING to the city couneil as “the court of last resort,” the Rev.
