As we started the sky was cloudy and looked much like rain, but the water was compara: tively smooth and we felt that we | would have to chance a wetting In | order to take advantage of the calm day, Until after noon our journey was Peaceful and uninterrupted, then the rain drops began to fall and we bat- tened down al} hatches, donned our oliskins and prepared for wet going. We had passed Adams river, where we had intended to stop the day be- fore and, according to the charts, there way no other good stop for some time, But after a bit we passed | a large cove with a creek entering about the middle and all the signs of a good camping spot. So we at- tempted to go in but found that the entrance to the creek was covered | with bars too shallow for even our little boat. ‘The beach was too much exposed to the waves to attempt a landing. THE RAIN CAME AND THE WIND WENT On we went, and the rain began to fall in real earnest. As the rain came up the wind went down, and as the wind went down the rain fell harder and harder. Poor old goat, she stood with her back humped to the rain, a sorry looking spec- tacle. Bo under a bit of shel- ter, and while we were wet ex- ternally the rain ran off our oil, skins and we were dry underneat# ‘Then, great grief! The engine be- gan to miss. I juggled the gas and jiggled the spark, which is about all there is to do to the little Bito, but she gasped more slowly and more slowly still and finally ex- |pired. Then we brought everything ashore and piled it in the tent and then stretched a tarp in front of the tent as additional shelter. By now the fire was going good—a regular beach fire—and things looked a little more prom- ising. Something to eat was next, but before we could cat we had to have water, so I set off in search’ of water, As we get farther north we find it increasingly easy to get but we usually try to camp where there are evidences of water, while in this case we had been forced ashore. There was no sign of water, but I walked up the beach to where the cliffs began and there I found rain water running down the rocks in such «uantity that I soon filled the bucket. Supper, then, and simple tho it was, we were hungry enough not to be particular, And then the bal- ance of the day was spent in trying to dry things out, something of a hard task.
