Safety Week HIS is safety week in Seattle. One man drowned when a canoe overturned One girl dead in an auto wreck. One speeder killed by a bullet from a deputy sheriff. A department store messenger robbed of his funds in mid- day by bandits on the most prominent corner in town. A raid on a gasoline filling station frustrated by a patrol- man under the bandits’ fire. That was Monday’s record. This is safety week in Seattle! Dirt! HE two boys, Leopold and Loek, rich men’s sons hfld in Chicago on a charge of atrocious murder, spent their adolescent days reading and discussing the dirt of life. They read and discussed the same things,;—things bear- ing on sex—that YOUR boy or YOUR girl, perhaps, are discussing now; certainly the same things that your NEIGHBOR'S boy and girl are discussing now, in school and college. -AND YOU CAN'T TOUCH DIRT WITHOUT GETTING SOILED. It is an old truism that is forgotten by a lot of people, nowadays. Soft mothers and fool fathers let their sons and daugh- ters read Freudian literature, trash about the uglier phases of sex, and say: “Our children are so much were!” It is a cold fact that truck of that sort is under constant discussion between young men and young women in their later ’teens and earliest twenties, in nearly every “intel- lectual” circle in the land. One of the first signs of it is a sort of weariness of out- look; a disillusioned attitude that is a wretched thing among the young. They are children, after.all. They are in search of the , . thrills of life, as the young of every species is. c BUT WHEN THE THRILLS THAT COME WITH THE Seniuiinie ci i DISCOVERY OF NEW AND HORRIBLE FACTS, HAVE " cor the paid cireu nd the highest wade ring hort, slightly bald, very “big gers have “hurrah” of the barker d r t y ble to the 10st guishable to th freaks are > away which the mal the strong-scented enclosure in has n the » perform on are used feeling that all they're witne But The Marvels of 1840 BY ALBERT APPLE B AC oy M ; ‘ more advanced than we gross wh ye with mirrors aboard, and VANISHED, THERE STILL REMAINS THE DESIRE FOR NEW THRILLS. Leopold and Loeb found the new thrill. They found it, they say, in murder. Just boys. Boys from good homes. They had touched dirt, as thousands of others of our could come ney on a modern ocean with its elec swimming 1 from afr Or if th of those airplane 1 tr that are ing the round-the-world flight vel in one young are touching it, and they were stained—blood red! Daugherty’s out, and Burns, too. Likewise, Denby. And “Alkali Al” is but a memory.
