BRAZIL TO AID: POOR PEOPLE Cost of Living Is Very High in Southern Country RIO DE JANEIRO, May 2.—Ef- forts being made by the Brazilian government to reduce living costs, which have doubled within two years, are considered by many as somewhat socialistic but, nevertheless, are get- ting results. Bearing in mind the truism that “hunger breads revolution,” the gov- ernment has taken steps to regulate transport and supply and to adopt other measures in an effort to minim. ize the position of the population. The cost of living in this country, generally thought of as a jand of plen- ty, has increased to such an extent that today the cost of bread, for a family of three would have covered all food costs for that family a years ago. Even coffee, Brazil's one great source of wealth, went up 10 per cent in price in less than a month recently, and every other commodity has risen in proportion. Profiteering 1s largely responsible for the present high cost of living in this country, especially high in Rio de Janeiro and other large cities along the coast. Transport conditions also come in for a good share of re- sponsibility in the elevated living costs, The government is forcing whole- salers and retailers to declare their stocks of food with a view of break- ing up hoarding. Furthermore, the government has granted preference to food transported over government- owned railways, has established a fixed price for milk, meat and bread, and has opened street markets where the government itself sells first line commodities to the consume: The efforts of the administration to reduce living costs has already been | re with certain success, Think § Seattle Boy Seen in Centralia |The chief of police at Centralia Was Friday investigating the re- ports of a little: girl of that town Who reported seeing a. youngster answering the description of 4-year- old Arthur Mace, of Seattle, in a camp of gypsies there Thursday.
