Shorrock Serves School District 21 Japanese-American S or ca of Co to chusetts with A big bisiness man told The Star that men of af- fairs refuse to run for public office because they can't stand the grublic’s gaff.” Shorrock, vice president of the Marine National bank, shown above, he erved the public 21 years and isnt much the worse Jor wear Blar Stall Photographers Years, and Stands the Public n099 712 “Gaff” Willingly UN for office? Me? Not much. “I’ve tod much at stake in my business. I can't afford it and besides, I refuse to take the abuse that goes with a public job.” It was one of the BIG BUSINESS MEN of Seattle king. He was discussing with a Star man the qual- ities of the various aspirants fot the mayoralty. The Star man had emphasized the importance of getting rae ntative men in public office. He had stressed the fact that Seattle, as the largest corporation in Washington, should insist on having competent ad- ministrative forces. Public business, The Star man pointed out, could be handled much the same as 7 private business, provided the ‘right sort of men 4 could he induced to perform public duty, whether it be in the government of the city, county, schools: or state. “You're a theorist,” said the Big Business! Man. “It doesn’t work out that way. Show me a really representative business man in this town who is willing to give his time and stand the gaff of the public. You can’t find one. They're just like I am. 4 They realize what is needed but they won't go thru iq with it. The public is too critical, too ready to find Ee fault and heap abuse and vituperation upon any public servant with whom they may disagree.” The Star man had been challenged to find aman such as he had described. He pondered long over the Big Business Man's idea, and then started out to prove his theory—to find a “rally representative busi- ness man” who would serve, the public ina competent . and take the public’s “gaff.” 4 The Star man looked long and diligently for his 4 man. He was beginning to think the Big: Business Man was right, when lo, he walked into a Second ave. bank and there found one who was not only willing , but HAD ACTUALLY PERFORMED THE SERVICE q FOR 21 YEARS. 3 So The Star man is presenting his man today in the : person of FE. Shorrock, vice president of the Marine a National bank, who for 21 years has been a member of the Seattle school board, presided over the des- tinies of children ranging in number from 10,000 to q 45,000, helped build 60 school buildings and stood the public gaff without having it interfere greatly with his peace of mind or his prosperity. “In my opinion a man in public business need not be more bitterly assailed than a man in private busi- n provided he conducts his affairs on gcod busi- ness principles,” said Mr. Shorrock, explaining the . reason why he is willing to do public service. “I cau readily see how a man may get himself into diffi- culties, how he may be misjudged for a time by the public and all that, but if he is sincere, purposeful and exercises the best judgment he has, he need not fear the public's opinion in the long run for the public is appreciative of right effort. “My only compensation has been the realization that the work of the school board benefits every home in the city—but that in itself is enough.” SO, MR.
