Since 1900 there have been 20 disasters in American mines in each of which 100 lives or more have been lost. Accidents in which one or two men have been killed are too numerous to mention. steps should be taken to lessen the number of disasters. Investigations by the bureau of mines have demonstrated that spreading of coal dust explosions can be prevented. The way to see that these new discoveries are put into use is to unionize all the mines of our country. The operators say that unionization is brought about at the expense of the public. That is not true. But even if it were true, the public would never ask that its pocketbook be protected at the expense of human lives. workers are sufficiently powerful to force the operators to provide safe working conditions and maintain inspectors. There is but one conclusion that can be drawn after surveying these figures and that is that America does not want coal that comes drip- ping with blood!
