DIM OR GLARE DANGERS SEEN English Fear Turned Off} Lights; Problem Met NEW YORK, Oct. 27—Our repre. | Sentatives meant well when they passed a law regulating headlights. But were they when they re dimmed This apparently untmportant ques: | al vehemen ompan automobile tion returns with es: and real significance, by a new viewpoint on headlights. The new angle comes from F Jand and is occasioned by a unani mous resolution recently passed by the general committee of the Royal Automobile club in that country The resolution |s “That this committee that tho practice of switching off electric headlights when meeting other traffic on the open road is fraught with cons! urges motorists to wag ‘There you are! A complete reve gal of our own iden—backed up by laws in overy state—that glaring headlights are detrimental to night ériving. DIMMING DANGER ARGUED But there is much to be sald fe the English viewpoint. Mem! the same general co! that sudden dimming of lights blinds the oncom| your car. At with dimmed headlig to clear your own wa) @ pitch-dark ro: Either way, dimmed, both approaching motor! find themselves at disadvanta ‘and have to fee! their way past each other. There ts another solution for this @ifficulty—one that has not yet been) tried out to any extent. One inve thas already applied for a patent based on this new idea. GUIDING LIGHT IS RELIEF "That is, the use of an auxiliary light at the left of the automobile, lighting up the left front wheel and tho left side of the road. Thus, when headlights are dimmed, the approaching motorist is guided | by the auxiliary light of the other automobile, and can steer clear of the car. An improvement of this form of Tight would be one that would throw its beams farther out to the left of the road, so that the motorist may see exactly how much clearance he has. For want of this, some sort of dim ming devices are being sold, whic’ cut down the intensity of the glar- ing headlight gradually instead of suddenly. This at least allows the eye to get accustomed to the change gradually. pees eae “GAS $1 PER” During the recent solar eclipse, when approximately 37,000 motorists visited San Diego, a temporary gas- oline famine was created, and by nightfall the price of gasoline had woared to $1 per gallon.
