Witness the disclosure that the Anderson steamboat clique, now operatir system, made a profit last year v ed at $6,000 to $60,000. For a considerable period ending in 1921, these ferries were run by the county, under the direc- tion of Capt. Anderson. They piled up a scan- dalous deficit,-in excess of $1, obo aday. Natu- rally, the public protested with great vigor. The county ring, of which Anderson was unit, then framed a scheme to turn the whole ¢ pensive public ferry system over to Anderson and give him a heavy cash bonus for operating the boats. It was openly charged at the time that this would be a raw steal; that the mounting deficit partially willful and was BROUGHT ABOUT PURPOSEHY, IN ORDER TO DI CREDIT THE IDEA OF PUBLIC.OWNERSHIP AND TO LAY THE GROUNDWORK FOR JUST WHAT HAS NOW HAPPENED. So strenuously did the public rebel against the scheme that the county comm ners were forced for atime to abandon it. Later it reappeared, modified. Under the revised plan, the ferries were to be turned over to Anderson with no cash bonus, but he was to be given 20,000 barrels of fuel oil, worth about $2 a barrel. Against a somewhat dimin- ished public protest, this deal went thru. Ander- son, the man who had made the monumental fail- ure as a county servant, became the private ex- ploiter of the transportation system. And this whole arrangement was okehed and in part engineered by a Chamber of Commerce committee, of which Laurence Colman, wealthy dock owner, was the most active member. The Star pointed out at the time that this was just the forerunner of a move by Colman and oth- er interested parties to turn the Port of Seattle properties into private hands. Colman is a com- petitor of the Port, he is operating his piers on leased harbor area (for which he pays a trifling sum as yearly rental), and in a few years his leases are going to expire. Under the law as it then stood, the tide lands would revert to the Port. Naturally, he would like to see the Port or- ganization wiped out; naturally, he would like to see the magnificent public terminals turned over to private companies (perhaps one of his own), to be run for profit first and foremost, as the county ferries are now being run. That is why the disclosure of the Anderson profit made at this juncture—with the idea that it will react against the Port’s plan for taking over the Skinner & Eddy tract from the government, the county ferry ‘ariously estimat- on which the people are to vote in May. That is why theymercenary Seattle newspaper which has been employed by the railroads and dock companies to attack the Port is now so in- dustriously pointing to Anderson’s amazing “suc- ” cess. It is part of the scheme. And the Chamber of Commerce has permitted itself to be a party to A it all. Bo Be * & of £ The conspiracy moves along on schedule time. But what will the people of King county do to the schedule next May?
