B. A. Service) LOS ANGELES, Feb. 22.—-For over two centuries the romance that powerfully swayed the character and destiny of George Washington bas remained obscure under his hero- ic achievements us founder of the nation. The gist of this love story, reveal: ihg the deepest traits of the greatest man of his time, was told today by Eugene E. Prussing, retired member of the Chicago bar and noted author. {ty on Washington. Bally Cary Fairfax, young wife of Washington's close friend, was the fist to plumb the heart of the man who became “first ir the hearts of hie countrymen," as Prussing recon- fn eight Years of intensive research, “We have,” he ¢ said, "no convince Ing’ publistied evidence of Washing: ton’s interest in any other woman from the time he was 17 until he Married Martha Custis, at 27, altho these are the susceptible years of any man's life. “The story of his affection for Sally Cary Fairfax is the true one. Tt iq attested by his own letters of that time and Is confirmed by one he Wrote 40 years later to the object of hig renounced love. “When the full story can be pub- lished, it will add greatly to Wash- ington’s reputation as a man.” As a young frontier surveyor, Washington went to live for a time with the Falrfaxes at Belvoir. George William Fairfax, his com- panion on many trails, was 22, his wife 18, and a toasted belle of the col ony. Mrs. Fairfax spurred Washington's KIS LOVE AND MARRIED MRS. CUSTIS saxreaye jo— 4 interest in Hterature and history ana| prodded his ambition. Thru this pro- pinquity to a gracious, vivacious woman, Washington quickly devel- od a mute, hopeless affection, as | his letters indicate—only to be con | feased tn writing in an hour of peril | and loneliness on the eve of a mill-| tary campaign! Then came hig renunciation and }his marriage to the widow of Dantel Parke Curtis and 40 years of happy wedded life. The two families lived tn full nelgh- borliness for 14 years, when the Pairfaxes removed to England. And ofice more, in mellowed sentiment, far down the sunset years, Wash- fogton adverts in a letter to Sally Fairfax to the time when young hearts raced beside the Potomac. “At all times,” said Prussing, “Washington's devotion was with- out reproach. The story of it gives teatitiofiy of the sound manliness of jan arent nature to match his glorious tness. “The pein? of the whole episode is that while Sally Fairfax rocked | his heart and held him enthralled | for 10 years, she did not upset his character.” Reconstructing George Washing- fon’s personality and activities by inspecting records in 60 counties in seven states, Prussing presenta an entirely new picture of him in his| forthcoming volume, “The © of George Washington, Decease: “The story of Washington's love and faithfulness,” said Prussing, “as well as the story of his business af- fairs, will appeal powerfully to the present generation, to whom the real fleah-and-biood Washington, a gentleman without peer, is prac |tieally unknown.” Hollywood Is Angered by Author’s Criticism DeMille Returns Fire in Bombardment of Movies; Says Public Is Best Judge LOS ANGELES, Feb. 22.—Instead of dying out, Hollywood's wrath ‘is rising hourly against what it terms the “anvil chorus of authors,” who, the picture people say, took movie money in large quantities, and hence should have the good taste to keep still, Cecil B. De Mille, phhywright and Movie producer, mustered all his ver- bal ammunition today and started oh the trail of Peter B. Kyne, Stew- att Edward White and Gouverneur Morris, “These gentlémen who are kicking over the traces,” he said, “these au- thors, Stewart Edward White, Gou- verneur Morris and Peter B. Kyne, have no right to insult the great American public. They pretend to criticise the movies for which they have been working, but they really insult the public. “The public has chosen between their pictures and the ones they have datnned, and the public has chosen the ones the author have damned. T'll take the taste of 60,000,000 people to, that of this handful of authors, The majority must be right. “These gentlemen like to talk about the canned drama—canned art, It ja a canned art, It {8 a cannery, Id it a canned peach any the less for htat? “These gentlemen are placing themselves in the class of people who said there never would be a railroad. They are looking at a gigantic, stu. pendous art—the greatest the world ever knew—and because they didn't succeed in ft they are standing ub ahd saying, ‘There ain't no such art.’ “Whom do you think the cham- bers of commerce will be building statues to’ 20 years from now—the man who started the film art or the contemporary literati? “The movies are not tied up with commmercialism, That hasn't been my experience at all,” The pictures cost a gigantic sum to make, A man must have hig feet on the ground, "The public wants to see some: thing good—the grént, big public, Not the little fellows with nose- glasses on. “An editor of a big magazine said we're from the Ghetto, But we have our family ‘crests—mostly kept in the attic, because we're too busy to bother with them, or with little editors, either, We appeal over their headg to the great public, FIND WRECKED FISH VESSELS SANTA BARBARA, Cal., Feb, 22. —Mystery. surrounding the disap- pearance of the O. K. and Eagle fishing boats, with crews and and Capt, Jerry Shiviey, Capt. Frank Nidever and Isaac Newton aboard, has been partly cleared up by the finding in Scotpion bay, Anacapa island, of Newton's body and further down the coast the wreckage Uf both boats. The Eagle, Nidever's boat, has been missing for two weeks, but it was thought it might have put in somewhere, The O, K., with Shiviey and New- ton aboard, joined in the search for Nidever and apparently went to its fato where the Eagle was also lost, Terror Grips Fag . Smokers in Utah SALT LAKE CITY, Feb, 22, ~ Deputy sheriffs today continued their drive against cigaret smoking in “inclosed public places,” which is forbidden by state law, making sev- eral arrests during the morning. Late yesterday they spread terror when they invaded the Hotel Utah and grill room of the state capitol, where legislators, attending the leg. islative session, were dining. Six ar- resta were made in the capitol and the Hotel Utah. Th included lufcheon guests of 8. L.
