Brown, of Sutherland, Ore., was flower girl at the wed- ding of Mra. L. H. Schneider (lene Smith), which was a recent event,—Portrait by Grady. Music Russian Pianist Superb Artist Sergel Rachmaninoff, who has been proclaimed one of the greatest creative composers and planists of the age, was heard In a concert last evening at the Metropolitan theater that surpassed all expectations. Not only is he a compqser of Interna- tonal fame, but his playing pro- claimed him a master planist as well. His compositions are now included in the repertoire of every symphony orchestra, as well as on the pro- grams of concert pianists and sing- era. His fame had long ago spread to the const and this, his first ap- pearance here, was indeed « vert- table triumph for him. Words are inadequate to express the playing of Rachmaninoff, as the mastery of bis Instrument has come aa near perfection as possible, His technique {s flawless, and his power of expression such that he portrays every emotion to the audience with- out effort. His Interpretation of Beethoven's “Apassionata Sonata” was indeed a revelation of pianistio art. His tonal coloring, light or profound, was su- perb, This was followed by Men- delasohn’s “Rondo Capricctoso,” an exquisite composition beautifully given. In Schumann's “Carntval” the artist revealed all the different phases of tho gay revelers. “Etude D Flat Major” and “Campanelia,” both by Liszt, were also given a wonderful reading, The numbers on the program, however, that received an ovation were his own “Melodie” and a tran- scription of Kreisler's “Liebesieid.” The audience refused to allow the artist to close his program after these numbers, and he gractously responded with “The Spinning Song” by Mendelssohn, Chopin's “Minute Waltz,” “Blue Danube” by Schultz Kylor, and then his own well known “C Sharp Minor Prelude,” which took on a new Nght under his fin gers. At thelr next concert the Ladies’ Musical club will present Edward Johnson, distinguished tenor of the Metropolitan Opera company, In con- cert March 12 at the Metropolitan theater, Vladimir Rosing Concert Tonight Viadimir Rowing, Russian tenor, will be heard In concert this evening at the Plymouth Congregational church.
