What Is the True Value of Single Blessedness? Should a Bachelor Have to Pay Tax? Leg- islators BY FIELDING LEMMON OLYMPIA, Feb. 3—How much should it cost to be a bachelor? ‘That's a question that has been oo- ‘cupying some of the brightest legisla- tive minds for the past few years. Representative Charies Heighton of King county started all the trouble two weeks ago when he introduced a Ponder Representative Floyd Danskin, of Spokane, claims that even this tnn’t enough. He also is a bachelor, and he should know when he says it ts worth $25 a year. Over in the senate tho prevailing opinion is entirely to the contrary. Senator Walter 8. The law works both ways. A man may wed on December 31, yet he is granted the exemption allowed a married person for the full year. ‘The bride's income for 1922, how: ever, must be considered with that of her husband In filing a return, A widower whose wife died before the end of the taxable year is classed as a single man and allowed only an exemption of $1,000. Similar conditions exist with re spect to the head of a family. If during the year his support of rel- atives in his home ceased, he is entitled only to the $1,000 exemp- tion. A man who has a dependent child, not mentally or physically de- fective, that attains the age of 18 years just before the close of the taxable year cannot claim the $400 for a dependent. But then the plot thickens when we come down to Representative Carl Morck from Aberdeen. Morck was in the bachelor lists ast year, but now he ts looking from the other side of the fence, His theory {s “Tax them the limit. If they don’t know any better than to stay single they ought to be taxed.” But then, hist! This ts a secret. It is rumored that there will be another bill that would tax spinsters. Miss Reba Hurn, the woman sen- ator from Spokane, would vote for It. But when asked what tho age limit should be she sald: “It wouldn't be diplomatio to answer that.” Appraise Estate at Over Million EVERETT, Feb. 3.—Appraisers, filing thelr reports yesterday, esti- mated $1,048,117.44 to be the value of property left by the late John T. Cynthia Grey: Bachelor Tax Class Legislation, Says One Man— Abridging Personal Liberties, Says Another— What Is Your Opinion? BY CYNTHIA GREY If the state legislature passes the Heighton bill providing for a $5 or $10 tax on bachelors, it will be class legislation, pure ard simple, writes one man, Letters are arriving from all over the state protesting against such a law, and if legislators are at all interested in the people they represent, they should “read 'em and weep.” Here are some of them: Dear Miss Grey: It was with mingled amusement and dis- gust that I read of the proposed Heighton bill to levy a tax on single or divorced men not the heads of families, between the ages of 25 and 60. It furnishes just another proof of the calibre of lawmaker that the big interests thrust upon us year in and year out. Tam not a radical or a bolshevik, but for the life of me I can- not see why we would not be a more orderly and law-abiding people if legislators were abolished, that is, the sort we must put up with. We are overburdened with laws and taxes. If one-half the laws we now have were rigidly enforced two- thirds of the population would spend its time in jails and penitentiaries. Any supposedly tes man who would draw up and present such an impossible, asinine law ought to be stricken from our list of lawmakers. Yourstruly, R.B.L 666 ‘ Miss Grey will receive callers in her office Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 1 te 2 p.m. and on Tuesday qnd Thursday from 11 a m to 18 m each | week. Please do not come” at other times, as {t seriously inter. fores with her writing. ' Dear Miss Grey: Apropos your invitation to discuss the tariff on bachelors: I will not argue the question re its fairness or unfairness; but will say that It is class legisiation pure and simple. It is unconstitutional and will not hold in any court. W.
