WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 15. Cynthia Grey: College Chap Pledged to Fraternity Keeps Company With Independent Girl—Asks If There Are Any Real Advantages to Being Allied With a Fra- ternity. SECOND NEAR SENECA fll SATURDAY Til BY CYNTHIA GREY The fraternity and the sorority—do they play an im portant role in college life? A college student who has pledged to a fraternity has asked advice His letter follows: Dear Cynthia Grey: You have shown so much kindness | toward the troubles of other people that I thought I would jcome to you for a little advice myself. I am a student at the juniversity and am making my own way. On entering, I was | told that one must belong to some fraternity on the ¢ ampus in order to Have any social influence at all, consequently | pledged one of the many that had tendered me dates Now, after many weeks of college life, I have come to the conclusion that I don’t really e to join; that is, to be in itiated. My reasons for this ¢ Finances—-I don't believe in spending $60 to join and $7 month for the upkeep of a house that I do not live in; I keep gompany with an inde- sorority women to all fraternity dances and parties What I am trying to find out is, how important is the fraternity to the student, especially one living within six blocks of the university? Am I under any obligations to the organization? If so, in what way? Should I feel embarra by telling them that I would not ca » be initiated? undecided as yet whether I shall break my relations with them, but if I had the true facts placed before me it would make it much easier for me to decide. Other students are similarly perplexed, I am sure, some having told me that they were under the impression that sorority girls did not desire their attentions unless they w affiliated with some frat nity. A complete and candid answer would be preéciated Yours truly, I IROUS You no doubt realize that there are different class fraternities, some giving their members more prestige than others If you are pledged to one of the best fraternities, I feel that you would be passing up a real opportunity not to join regardless of the cost; that is, of course, provided you cdn possibly do so. The influence of such a fraternity not only benefits you while in college, but thruout your life. Here are some of the advantages: Should you find yourself in a strange city, you would always be welcomed by your frater- nity brothers—it would give you advantages in a business way, aside from the social life In case you cannot possibly join this year, why not state the plain truth to them, that is, about your finances, and tell them you would be glad to join next year if such an grrange- | ment can be made. cee a of Knighthood Was in Flower” make good EEE TE “4 | What was the “Hear Flag Re in whieh Bigger and more wonder- lpnace> “™ ‘ dle 4 republic declared in June, 1846,| sweet or it will sour before it rises <4 ful than you think a picture (OD can ever be!
