You wouldn't take @ tip and neither would I; good tut he is, nevertheless, @ gem of @ barber, a paragon among As @ class I do not Ike bar bers, I do not despise them; Z hate and fear them. They recom nie in me, when I enter their shops, a Umid man of no social importance. They patronize me and insult me politely, in the subtle way that barbers know. They rub disdainful fingers over my head and tell me my hair is dirty, Do 1 desire a shampoo? If I say, “No; thank you,” they shrug | their shoulders as if to say, “Very well, if you are too poor or stingy to pay for a shampoo, let your hair stay dirty.” TELL, HIM HIS HAIR 18 FALLING They inform me my hair ts com- ing out and that 1 will soon be jbald. A lie! My heir te not coming: out, ‘They onty wish to sell me & dash of tonic. When they shave me, they smother and scald me with wet towels that are too hot. %| They take my nese between mes cular thumb and index digit, while I am helpless, and twist my head this way and that, meanwhile in- quiring if I do not desire @ face mamage. If 1 say, “No, thank you ever #9 much!” they shrug their should ers again as if to say, “The Lp fish!” And they talk to me! 1 nate ool versationalists who pretend to be barbers. I am not a sneb you un- derstand, I am willing to meet @ barber on terms of social équality anywhere but in a barber shop. But when a barber remarks, tls razor at my throat. |) HE FEELS SORT A’ FUNNY AT THAT And when I am finally released from his clutches and pay him, and I don’t tip bim, he aoe, ks at me in @ supercilious manner, and tosses the money into the cash ys There ts nothing in this that I can object to, really. Still I go, away with an uncomfortable feeling that the barber, figuratively speaking, put his thumb to his nose and wriggied his fingers at me, shout- ing; “Yah, yah! The old ¢heap skate! Too stingy to tip a barber!” Why should I tip a barber? Why, jfor that matter, should a barber We would feel insulted if one was offered us. A bribe? Ah, that's dif- ferent. Offer me a hundred thous and dollars and I might take fer me a thin dime and I will you on the nose. pee OH, YES! THAT PERFECT MAN! But I must hurry and tell you about The Perfect Barber. I found him by accident. Thrice he has shaved me and thrice he has cut my hair. I had only to tell him once about the towels and how long I Mked my hair, and that I prefer it cut “down the. sides and not around,” and he remembered thé next time and the next. “A shave and a haircut, please,” says I to him. “Yessir,” says he. And not another word out of him. Do you get the import ance if this? NOT A SINGLE, SOLITARY WORD! If I asked him for a shampoo or & massage or some hair tonic, he would comply, I suppose. But if I ask him for a shave and a hair- cut, @ shave and a haireut are what T get, and nothing more, DOESN'T EVEN SAY IT’S A NICE DAY He does not mention the weath- er. He does not desire my opinion of the baseball team, nor does he assume I am interested in his. He evinces no concern about my poli- tics or business or religion, He shaves my face and he cuts my hair, and when he is done, I pay him, and he says “Thank you” as if he meant it. He does not act as if he expected a tip. I do not tip him. I never have tipped a barber and I never shall, I hate and fear all barbers, save this one. Many barbers will no doubt read this article and be angered by it. But they should remember that the |faults I have mentioned have mado: Jillette a multi-millionaire, When you read this, you will, I) am sure, grab your hat and, with |@ glad ery of “Burekaf” hasten to \the shop of The Perfect Barber.
