H. Thomas, chair For Sale Everywhere The Seattle Star has many thousands more subscribers and readers than any other Seattle newspaper. For that reason it has been necessary for us to establish sales depots in all parts of the city. The downtown newsboys have all editions of The Star for sale at 2 centsa copy. The branch sellers are located in all oy of the town—at every place where is possible to sell papers. This is for the convenience of people who do not come thru the main part of town on their way from work. Hundreds of suburban stores have found that there was such a great de- mand for The Star that they have add- ed a sales counter for The Star to their stores. These news-stand sales are of great value and convenience to readers. It enables them to purchase copies of the paper while they are doing their after- noon shopping. It is also of value to the store owner, because it brings peo- ple into his store regularly. Awhole army of carriers delivers The Star to all parts of the city every night. There is not a block in Seattle that is not covered each evening by one of our ¢arriers. If you want your name on our lists, you should order the paper by carrier. The price is only 50c a month, The Seattle Star MAIN 600 Seventh and Un PLANS TO EQUALIZE RAILROADS cdeacten ihe te Big Mel- on Cut by One Road as Others Complain WASHING TON, “Dee, 21-—~The declaration by the C. B. & Q Raik way Co. of m 15 per cent special cash dividend and a semiannual 6 per cent dividend at the same time, in the face of the plea of the rail- rondn for $500,000,000 from the United States treasury to keep them out of bankruptey is an instance of the inequality now existing in the rajiroad situation which must be froned out by consolidation under the grouping plan worked out by Prof, Ripley, for the interstate com merece commission. ‘This ix the opinion of Senator Cummins, chairman of the intery state commeres committee of the senate, before which hearings have been in progress on the rajiroad re funding bill. “According to the interstate com merce commission, the C. B. & Q is one of the few railroads under- capitalized,” said Senator Cummina today. TENDS TO PYRAMID PROFITS OF ROAD “I am of the opinion that it ts wrong for railroads to invest their surplus earnings in properties, them ask the people to pay an interest on those properties which they have provided the railroads with. The effect is cumulative, and tends to pyramid the profits of the roads. “While it is impracticable to per mit one railroad to go out of busi- ness, thus imposing a hardship on one community, because another undercapttalized railroad is earning dividends and still reaps some bene- fit from government relief to the whole system, there ts one way to avoid such inequalities, since the ralironds have been evolved from Private individual business enter Prises Into @ national system which prevents the treatment of one raik road separately and without regard for the others. “That way is the Ripley group. ing plan. Such a plan, which will come before the I. C. C. for hear ing soon, will iron out such in equalities. NEEDED AND MUST BE HAD “Such consolidation is needed, and must be had, as it will compel such roads as the C, B.. & Q. to assint to the government at least heif of that excess profit. “Standardization of rolling stock and of repitirs, together with provement of type is to be as far as possible, but we may pect #uch roads as the C. B. & to reap undue benefits white are trying to help the weaker unless some plan Ripley consolidation and grouping plan is adopted.” FLOOD LOSS IS $107,900 Damages to roads and bridges in King county from recent floods are estimated at $107,900 by County En- gineer Thomas R. Beeman, in a re- port submitted Tuesday to the coun- ty commissioners, In asking that an emergency be declared in order that the work of repair may be carried on at once, Beeman requested only $91, The remaining $16,150, he explained, con- sists of some minor repairs, that have already been completed and charged to the road and bridge fund; and more serious damage on the Sunset highway, which Beeman be- Neves should be paid for out of the primary state highway fund. This estimate, Beeman stated, ts confined to actual damage done by the flood, and it does not provide for replacing certain temporary struct- ures, such as the Miller river bridge, with permanent work, THREE AUTOS ARE WRECKED Three automobile wrecks were re- ported Tuesday to the sheriff's of- fice, An Auburn six was said to be over- turned on the river bank near the Duwamish store. A Ford, license 58617, was report- ed to be resting upside down in a ditch at the Lake Burien corner of Des Moines highway. The owner listed is R. Davis, 6200 Ranier ave, Near Renton a car with Oregon li- cense No, 59442, was found wrecked and stripped of most of its equip- ment. The owner is given as J. E. Field, 1550 High st., Bugene, Ore, 5 AUTOS PILE UP AT CORNER Failing to negotiate the ice-covered pavement at the intersection of Sum- mit, Melrose aves. and Pine et., five automobiles were piled up along the parking strips Tuesday, No injuries to drivers or passengers are known, One of the cars, which residents said belonged to ©, D. Fisher, of Fisher Bros. flouring mills, was over- turned. This triangled intersection on a slight grade is considered one of the most dangerous in the city. — Bringing / Alleged Forger Back Here Capt. Fred Kornick, fugitive from Justice, wanted by federal authorities on forging charges, was to be brought to Seattle Tuesday from Portland by Chief Deputy Marshal Frank Burrows. Kornick was taken into custody Sunday by Portland detectives, who notified Seattle officials of bis ar- rest. Kornick escaped from a fed- eral official several weeks ago after being brought to Seattle from New Jersey accused of forging coast artil- lery corps mileage checks in this @ity January 3 of this year.
