First you must find the slker handle. (Generally. in the ash-pile.) Then you open the fire and ash-pit doors. Kneeling in the ashes you connect the shaker handle to the grate. Then you poke through the feed door with the left hand while you shake the grate with ‘the right. The smoke outlet is not large enough to take care of the draft with the doors open and the result is that the cellar is filled with suffocating gas and soot, which, together with the dust from the ashes, work their way through the various joints in the casing, around the water- pan, and through the floors up into the house.
