Picked Up on | Corporation Counsel Um! Do You Like B (Some observations of a mem- ber of The Star staff who has just returned from a vacation trip into the north half of the Rainier National park.) A third (and best) gateway into the northwest's reatest scenic wonderland will soon be opened. Three seta of contractors are at work pushing an automobile high: way from Carbonado to Fairfax jand from that little coal mining hamlet up the Carbon valley, into the northwest corner of Rainier National park and to the very none of the Carbon glacier, to me the most interesting glacier on the mountain. These contractors are working, rempectively, in Pleree county, in the Rainier national forest and in the park itself. By the end of next summier they ought to have work pretty well completed. When they do,-it will be scarcely more than three hours’ ride by automobile from Seattle to the dirty, gray snout of the tceriver. 2 ee How fortunate has been the lection of names for points Rainier park! For instance, nothing could be more euphonious than those of In- dian bestowal; Wavhaukaupauken fala, Ohanapecosh glacier, Littie Tahoma (is there an implied con- feasion in the adjective”, Wahpen- ayo peak, Williwakas creek, Sluiskin falla and Tutoosh range. And what could be more descrip- tive than some of these: Summer- land, Rushingwater creek, Cowlitz Chimneys, Goat Isiand mountain, Elysian Fields, Sunset Amphitheatre, the Ramparts, Columbia Crest, Point Success and Liberty Cap? Even the names of humans who have been honored—chiefly men who have been foremost in explor- ing or studying the mountain-— seem to fit excellently. For in- stance: Wittis Wall, Ingraham glacier, Rickeecker point and Van Trump park. Or interestarousing character, such as: Mount Wow, Ipsut Creek, Owyhigh Lakes, Tokaloo Rock and Satulick Point. ee Tt seems to me that the Rainier | National Park company ought to do a jot more for the hikers, the folks who get off-the auto highways dnd deeply bob-marked trails and up in- to the heights. It would be a fine, publicepirited jave, and residents of protested to the council. the district A nonspillable flower vase to keep @ corsage bouquet fresh Is a French invention.
