"This state- ment follows completion of @ sur- elopment bureau of the Chamber, which is headed by Colonel Howard A. Hanson, chalr man. Mr. Thomas’ statement points out that Seattle's great need at the present time is optimism and con- fidence. “There are many reasons for optimism,” says the statement. “While there is nothing’in the na ture of a boom ig sight we are steadily approaching a condition of sound prosperity, at least so far as safe to say that if agriculture is on basis all other behind.” The statement says that net re turns to the growers will be much larger than a year ago, Where there were disastrous lonses a year ago in many instances there will be 004 profits this year. For instance, where a year ago the fruit industry waa uncertain and unprofitable, this year it promises to pay the grow- ers substantial returns. “The fruit crop of the Wenatchee district will bring to the growers about $17,000,000, while the fruit erpp of the Yakima district ‘will total approximately $20,000,000," Mr. Thomas said “The prunes and small fruits of the west side will adé more than $10,000,000 to the total. The Walla Walla and Spo- kane districts will bring an aggre gate for the_state to an amount far beyond $50,000,000. Returns from the fruit crop are already coming in.” The statement points out that the harvesting of one of the largest crops of wheat ever grown in Wasb- ington is now well under way. The Agercente returns afe expected to be at least $40,000,000, even tho the price may average under $1.00 per bushel. These two crops promise to bring fully $10,000,000 into the state this fall. “The stock man, bard hit last year, now sees light ahead.” Mr. Thomas’ statement continues. “Spring lambs have been bringing fair returns, altho high freight rates are keeping down the profits.
