How well they carry this conception of their duty into actual, practice has been strikingly demon- strated during the past two weeks. . About July 1st false criminal propaganda regarding the condition of the Dexter Horton Banks was set in motion, and pushed with almost unbelievable energy and skill. Notwithstanding the high reputation of the Dexter Horton Banks for conservatism and safety, built up during more than fifty years’ service to this community, many uninformed people began to doubt whether safety existed anywhere. . This doubt was allayed only with the publication Thursday of a statement | by the Dexter Horton Banks that they were prepared to pay cash instantly to all depositors... When the force of the rumors had spent itself, the Dexter Horton Banks had not only paid cash on every check presented, but had done this without borrowing a dollar or accepting any of the numerous offers of assistance tendered from many sources. On June 30th cash shown in the statement of the Dexter Horton Banks was $6,158,490.35. Yesterday, July 15, the Dexter Horton Banks had $7,503,743. 02 cash on hand—an increase ’ during these fifteen days of $1,345, 252. 67.
