Hite BNPERT Ve ; RES paired. prompt Winlay, 1615 Third ‘ave | veterans ended Saturday. | get lined up t, died Friday at| PAGE 2 JOBS GIVEN TO 216 VETERANS But Majority of Them Are Temporary The first two weeks of The Sta American Legion campaign to end unemployment among world war During this perlod 216 Jobless service men were given work, and 205 applications were received for positions Thus there more calls were fifled than were men regintered. The answer ix that the majority of jobs were but temporary. There are at the present time in the neighborhood of 150 cardy of jobless veterans on file in the adjutant’s office of Rain- ler Noble post, Fully 60 per cent of this number are men with families to support. All of them want to ermanently. But they are mighty to get any sort of work in the meantime, The Star-American Legion employ- ment service, which is conducted in the office of Adjutant Lindley, Rain: ler Noble post, in the basement of the Stuart building, Fourth and University, is the only service of the kind for veterans in the state. Miss Laura C. Curwell, assistant to the adjutant, is in active charge jof the work. She is aanivted by Mra. George BE. Muff, who is donating her time, and by one of the jobless vet- erans. But the employment work ta rapidly swamping the office, and much of the regular post work has had to be neglected, Efforts have » to secure additional aid from the veterans’ welfare commis- sion and the city, but both have | fatled. “We have a man picked out for the work,” Adjutant Lindley said Satur- day. “But we have no funds avail- able to pay him. It is work that re ~ | quires special fitness and training. If we had some way of raising a few hundred dollars we could put this man on, turn the whole work over to him, and rapidly clean up the sit- uation. Within three or four months at the longest.” It was reported to Lindley that at | least one Seattle man has discharged “” his Japanese chauffeur and replaced him with an exservice man, after |reading the figures printed in The Star last Tuesday.
