In other Alaska Contract Competes with Eastern Ma- chinery Manufacturers. The Alaska Engineering Commission has awarded the contract for coal handling machinery in the govern- ment-owned mines of the ter- ot)ritory to the Brinkley Com- pany of this city. The contract was given in the face of sharp competition with Eastern transmission machinery houses and after the overcoming of many oth- er obstacles, All of the machinery is to be made in this city at the plant of the Brinkley Com- pany in South Seattle. The machinery is to be used for washing and grad- ing of coal from the mines, the coal to be used by the Navy and the new Alaska Railway. Up to this time practically all transmismion machinery stocked in Beattie has come from the East, but with the growth and expansion of the Brinkley Company the West can compete most successfully with the East in this product, as all others. The Brinkley Company has recent- ly completed its new machine shop in South Beattie, which gives it an area of 10,000 square feet of floor space tn this department. Tranamis- sion machinery and grey iron cast- ings are specialties manufactured by the Brinkley firm. Over seventy men are employed.
