DEATH CHARGED TO KIDNAPING Potato King Succumbs to Rough Treatment FORT SMITH, Ark., March 17-— “Joe” Alexander, “potato king” of Oklahoma and reputed to be a mii Monaira, died in a hospital here from spinal meningivs. Alexander was bufider and ruler of an empire all his own. From nothing but a 60-acre allotment of lan¢. gtven him by the government because of his strain of Cherokee Indian blood he wrought a fortune which, perhaps, even he could not count. Thru his heavy operations tn pota to-growing Alexander came to be known as the “potato king of Okla homa.” Altho he never visited anywhere except on busines, the fame of his riches spread beyond his own two states. Recently he obtained nation wide publicity when he was kidnaped by thugs in St. Loula, Mo., held for ransom in a deserted house outside the city limits for a week, forced by torture to sign a draft for $25,000 and @ note to his banker to pay it, and escaped from his captors when his guard fell asleep at his post. For three or four hours, Alexander walked thru the frosty night until he reached the home of Sheriff Bopp of | St. Louis county, where ho reported | his experiences. The draft was not paid. The exposure and the torture his captors used to force him to sign the draft are held accountable by hiv | triends for the iliness that caused his death.
