Now it appears that the Northern Pacific claims the land on the ground that it has not relinquished title to it, altho it has failed to survey it in accordance with the hind grant until after Bull had made a bona fide settlement. In this contention the U. S. land office sides with the company, altho supreme court decisions are quoted quite the contrary To remedy this situation, which not only affects Bull but many other bona fide settlers, Senator Poindexter, of Wash- ington, secured the passage of a bill determining the title in favor of the settles. The bill has been passed, but the} department of the interior refuses, it is claimed, to abide} by it. It means therefore that Bull and others, in his plight, must appeal to the courts—a matter that at best would mean five to ten years of litigation at an enormous cost. Would it not be more appropriate for Senator Poindexter to take the matter up with the department of the interior? | If his bill means what it says, he should make that very clear to the department. It seems peculiar that the rights of bona fide settlers should be so completely ignored in favor of a railroad com- pany that has no doubt been made wealthy by free lands given it, It might even be pertinent to inquire whether the money thus obtained had gone into better railroad service, as contemplated by the land grant, or whether it had been} sunk into private pockets. In any event, where the company has failed to survey lands, where they have remained idle, and they have been taken up by bona fide settlers, Uncle Sam ought to be big enough to enforce the settler’s claims as was always in- tended. Senator Poindexter hasn't finished his job in this matter. He might inquire, for instance, as to why the company is MITT FIREWORKS CO A WHITKH FIRM BAiter The December 13th On Monday. you published @ news Biar item re@urding the big fireworks in dustry which afted in Hong Kong t the Hitt Fireworks ¢ » has been been haa the effort farm.
