At an open meeting of the King county fair price committee, held on the third floor of the federal building Wednesday at 11 o'clock, a number of cases of alleged profiteer- ing were instanced and data taken by the committee for federal invest gation. Between 30 and 40 persons took advantage of District Attorney Saunders’ invitation to attend the meeting, and & number of com plaints, criticisms and suggestions were offered. Figures introduced showing that shoes costing $8 in 1914 were priced at $17.70 at prewent, were answered by the testimony of T. .A. Baxter, of the Raster Shoe company, who declared that as far as the retailer was concerned profits were approxi mately the same, and quoted figures showing that some shoes cost the dealer $18 per pair, H. R. King, of King Bros, spoke at length on the clothing situation, giving results of conferences which he attended recently in Washington City. “I have been in the clothing busi ness in| Seattle for 18 years,” he maid, “and for seven of thoes years only do my books show a profit, The average retail clothing store in Seattle, I am sure, ts selling at a Jess than reasonable profit in order to keep the public good will.” King gave shortage of production and consequent’ high cost of raw materials as prime factors in the in crease of prices since the war. He further stated that he was certain that neo merchant in the city was making over § per cent, In closing the meeting District At torney Saunders said: “The govern: ment machinery stands ready to in- vestigate any case of alleged profiteer- ing if specific details are presented and will prosecute wherever the facts warrant.” The “fair price’ committee is com- posed as follows: Retafl grocers—Thomas W. Nash, secretary of Augustine & Kyer, and Carson R. Stong of Stong’s grocery, Department stores—J. Vernon Hop: kins of McDougall & Southwick com- pany. Retail stores—T. ter & Baxter.
