H. W. Bowen, 68, the man sus pected of murdering Mies Housel committed suicide this morning | Deputy sheriffs found Bowen's {body in an outhouse adjoining the school. He had fired a bullet Into his brain. Entering the pantry window and cutting the telephone wire, the mur derer made his way to Miss Housel's room. The indications are that he ke the woman when he entered her room and then shot her. He then ignited a quantity of excelstor which had been previously covered with distillate and placed it in the kiteben ana pantry. Herman H. Housel, the victim's 50-year-old father, who lives in. an sdjacent wing of the building, heard the shota and investigated. fic nelled smoke and went to the kitehen, He found that part of the building on fre There are 11 ns, Including pu pils, residing in the building, Their lives were in great danger until the 7d man procured a fire extinguisher snd put out the blaze. It was suggested that s “house cleaning” may be in prospect in the state department, which will put the handling of A:erica’s foreign affairs in the hands of an entirely new group of men. The present state de partment staff cooperated with Lansing in the !nternaUonal dealings to which the president ts believed to have objected. Following his conference with W0- won, Colby sald: “Good taste I think, counssie the briefest of statements until such time as the senate has acted upon my nomination as secretary of state, “I may my that IT had a leng and unhurried conference with the prea dent, which impressed me with the great confidence he reposes in me, I hope I shall not prove inadequate tn performance of the greag duties be fore me.” Colby refused to state what his po litical affiliations are #t present. It was not learned whether the ap pointment had been offered to any other man before Colby accepted it.
