Saat Ss i a EES | cs HE SEATILE STAR ‘Are you a man with the theory that “Luck” plays the controlling part in your success? “Luck” alone never made any man. If “Luck” exists, there comes enough luck to everyone to make his mark in the world if ability and ambition measure up to the op- portunity. Don’t be a kicker Better to believe in “luck” than to believe in “kick- ing.” A man who believes in luck generally has some ambition and wants to take advantage of the chances for bettering his future, and calls that “luck.” It’s a good word sometimes. Kicking about things doesn’t help any. It doesn’t take any brains to be a kicker. A mule can do that. A mule that stands still and kicks won’t get anywhere, neither will the man who does it. You willfind the kicker is always the one who has no luck. Whatis your horse:power? In this time of industrial upheaval, when strikes, walkouts and constant clashing betweenemployer and employe is taking place everywhere, human effi- ciency is standing still. There must be a better un- derstanding among all workers. The time has come for all men to gauge them- selves. Some men are 50 horse-power; some men 100 horse-power. A 50 horse-power man will break under a 100 horse-power load. How many 100- horse-power men are carrying 50 horse-power loads, and allowing a lot of human energy to go to waste? ‘A 50 horse-power man must be hooked up to a 50 horse-power job. Turn around, look yourself over! What is your job capacity? Does your job keep you busy every minute, or are you lingering half the time? You may be a 100 horse-power man doing a 50 horse-power job. It’s time for you to stop and think. A little more knowledge and you would hold the 100 horse-power job. . Start speeding yourself up! 100% efficiency means 100 horse-power capacity. The great fundamental trouble with our industrial Are youa 50 or 100 horse-power man? situation is the belief that lessened production, with shorter hours, and lessening of human efficiency, will create a greater demand, force up wages and prevent unemployment. Never was there a more false idea. Efficiency is the keynote of prosperity Efficiency is the keynote of prosperity. A high de- gree of efficiency, combined with greater produc- tion, is bound to give greater employment, reduce the cost of commodities, increase the purchasing pow- er of the dollar and raise the standard of living. The enlightened mind Our greatest need today is for better training of employes in all lines of work, whether in the office or in the shop. An enlightened mind is the greatest asset on earth. Enlightenment means knowledge of both the industrial and economic side of your work; and its relation to the finished product. The most skilled workman, lacking this knowledge, may be a hindrance or a disturber, instead of ahelp. . No man can handle his job with efficiency and economy unless he knows why he is doing it, what it costs to produce, ete. Organization leads to progress Organization leads to progress. Orderly organiza- tion opens the way to the consideration of all diffi- culties, and reduces the possibilities of industrial dis- ruption. Men should get together in fair weather, so when stormy weather comes they will approach their difficulties in a different spirit, with a knowledge of the other man’s viewpoint. When a strike is on, it is too late. | This Page Contributed by Prominent Seattle Business Concerns copyRiacuT Ko Oh ‘ Sy Ce Cs ae ore eres Vi. nwa awe te ee ee be @ wWeenos 628 ER Ree eee eee 6 SO:
