This year the players formed their own organization and operated their own league. The 1920 league will surely profit from the mistakes of the present campaign. There have been many mistakes made in the games played thus far, but the league was handicapped by lack of time. After all, this year’s title is a small thing, as each team only had one chance, and the best team in the world is likely to have an off day now and then. Next year The Star hopes to maintain and operate « bigger and better league thru which amateur baseball in the elty will be put on a plane + before attained. It’s up to the players to make the league & success because without them it is impossible for the league to operate, Here's a chance for ‘the local amateurs to put them- selves over solid, and it's up to them to avail themselves of the opportunity. For the past several seasons amateur baseball in Seattle has been dormant and has been on the verge of “kicking the backet.” While The Star's series did not get under way until the first of September there has been more real interest in amateur baseball in the city during the past month than there has been tn the last neveral years. In this the league has been very successful. Good baseball has been the regular line of diamond fare offered by the clubs in the series and the city fans and the players them- selves are now awakened to the possibilities in local amateur sport. Election of the University of Washington gridiron captain will be held some time shortly before the first game of the season, according to Darwin Meisinest, manager of athletics at the uni- versity. Three duly elected captains are in school this year and will turn out for the team—Ervin Dailey, Ross Williams and George Smith being the men. It seems as if Smith, elected to pilot the 1917 eleven, but who left school for the front, has an edge on the others for the Job, but it is up to the players themselves to decide who shall lead them. There is absolutely no chance of the 0. A. C-Washington break being patched up this season, says Meisinest, as Washington couldn't make the trip South at the time the game was scheduled, because they wouldn't pay him enough money, is on his way to the Pullman eleven across the mountains shortly before the time scheduled for the 0. A. C. tilt. If the aggies came here this year it would mean that Washington played 0. A. C., Oregon and Cali- fornia away from home in 1: Good second sackers are scarcer than a $5 pair of shoes in the Coast league this year. Marty Krug, the Sait Lake keystone guardian, stands head and shoulders above the other second base men of the league. Grover of Onkiand didn't play long enough this season out here to demonstrate his real class; Crandall of San Francisco flivvered; Wares of Seattle isn't any too strong; Ken- worthy was given the gate by the Angels; McGaffigan of the Sacs has played mediocre ball all year; Fisher of Vernon is just a fair ball player, and Paddy Siglin of Portiand has been playing away below form. There won't be much puzzling when it comes to picking an All-Coast second baseman this season. Here's a tip for the nimrods. Get acquainted with the what, when and where of hunting in the state before you start out on your trips. Information can be obtained at Piper & Taft's or from the state game commissioner. It's. better to know before one finds * oneself in the hoosegow for breaking laws one doesn't know about. Judges of the present day aren't very easy with those “who didn’t know they couldn't do it.” With the winter boxing season getting inder way in all of the cities of the Northwest It is hoped that the new city boxing commission, which has been appointed by the city and county police officials to supervise the game here, will be able to get together soon so as to allow Seattle fans to have their ring sport. There is a lot of good ring talent in this part of the Coast and Seattle fans are anxious to see the boys in action again. Let's go: atrlets in the western part of the ose.
