A Word Concerning AUTUMN _ DRESS MODES VEN a passing glance at the new Dress modes convinces one that the authentic style is short as to sleeve as well as abbreyiated as to skirt, and that skirts are drawn up * in front draperies instead of in back as has been the rule. No matter how narrow the under- tunic may be, the skirt will somehow gain an impression of fullness above —with tunics or draperies. Sparkling with jet, metallic laces and silver cloth are, Autumn’s even- ing frocks, some of the more formal with ‘trains, others with long tulle streamers which serve as scarfs. Burnt-orange shades, Titian-red and apple-green are some of the col- ors that have inspired the artist couturieres toward creating master-* pieces for Autumn. —/ or yf 2 on — a oes IX preparing the fashion-world for a change of mode, the Autumn Tailleur may well be likened to the barometer with its advance information. Through it we see the fall from favor of the extremely long and close-fitting skirt, and the return to grace of moderation in length and width. Indications point to variety in jacket styles—some of the plain-tailored effects dispense with a belt, and others compromise between belt and no-belt by girdling them- selves with a narrow shoestring affair. a Ine % -- sececrtpnieasenn/ osm engine ge WME ROE These introductory displays are notable for the beauty of the fabrics—the pile surface of Bokhara Cloth rivaling in richness the downy Peachbloom Suiting with its suede- like texture, and there are also models in Duvetyn, Velour, Tricotine, Novelty Cloths and English Homespuns. Furs enrich many of the new creations — nutria, Hud- son seal, opossum, mole and seal—others achieve distinc- tion by judicious use of embroidery, tucking, cording and cable stitching. Many and beautiful are the new brown shades— MADURO BEAVER _ BISON FAISAN CHAUDRON REINDEER —and there are also lovely blues—Victory-blue, Duck- blue and the perennial Navy, and a daring new color, Pompeian-red. A glimpse of the new suit modes as presented by | Frederick & Nelson is afforded in the few sketched, from among the many that bid for admiration here. (4 EN gal i
