Jewell, president of the railway department of the American Federation of Labor, an nounced today he intended to see President Wilson before night with regard to shopmen’s wage demands. Jewell in directing the strike vote now being taken among 500,000 rail- way shopmen in the United States, and 100,000 in Canada. He ordered the vote Saturday, when Railroad Director Hines made clear the railroad administration has no money to grant demands of the shopmen for increases averaging 25 per cent. Hines also urged the shopmen to await action by congress upon Presi- dent Wilson's plan for a special com- mittee to study wage demands of all railroad workers. It was learned that Jewell plans to tell the president that officials of the shopmen’s union will be unable to prevent a strike unless wages are increased immediately. “It is becoming very difficult for offictals to prevent unauthorized strikes by the shopmen,” said Jewell today, after he had received more reports that men are quitting work all over the country. “They are beginning to feel that negotiations with the railroad ad- ministration and government of- ficials gain them nothing but delay.’ al Victory Chess Tourney at ¥ August 11 to 23.
