Church, General Manager of This Concern, Brings Much Out-of-Town Work to the City | Since the Vulcan Company passed into the control of Frank Waterhouse & Co., the plant has been vastly improved and _ its cilities greatly enlarged. Its output has taken on immense pro- tions and its plant is steadily gaining recognition abroad. Under mew management it has been thoroughly rejuvenated and 0 ized with the aim of not only attaining the maximum of ef- Hency on the war work on which it had been engaged for many , but of taking its place as a manufacturing enterprise of the rank under peace time conditions. It manufactures variou of machinery and preparations have been made for the mar of its product on a large scale. f Among recent improvements at the plant is the new elevated and a track scale for weighing cars. By means of this track loaded with pig iron, scrap, coke, etc., are brought inside the and hauled up an incline directly over the bins, into which their mts are dumped. Other tracks also are brought within the lings, so that finished products are loaded upon the cars by i€ great electric cranes and unnecessary handling is entirely elim- ated. Other notable improvements are also under way, in addi- m to those recently completed. | The greater part of the Vulcan’s output has been going into Seattle shipyards, including nearly all of the deck machinery the vessels turned out by the Skinner & Eddy corporation, and bably 90 per cent of the engine-castings for the Ames yards. 9 winches for the new ships have represented a large portion ie Vulean’s production. Hundreds of them have been delivered here are orders on hand for hundreds more. They weigh about pounds each and are built from the ground up in the Vulcan ps, altho simply in the interests of speed and efficiency, large antities of the smaller castings have been turned out by other i s to the Vulcan’s order. Seattle firms have done this work ie extent of their ability to handle it. Some of it, however, has sent east for the reason that it could not be done in Seattle. © Seattle foundries have been supplying_approximately 1,500,000 th of these castings, while an Eastern concern has been at work n another large order. Anchor windlasses, weighing 34,000 pounds each, is another of the Vulcan’s contribution to the new fleet of American o carriers. Ship shafting is another, the plant now turning out le set complete for new ships each week, including stern bear- and propeller hubs. The building of condensers is still another. | The Vulcan supplies all the brake shoes used by the Great ern Railway on its Western division. A‘ twenty-five ton electric crane of the Vulcan’s own design, a five-ton auxiliary hoist, handles the heavy castings and ngs. ‘There are three other large electric cranes in the machine shop foundry, two of them are of ten ton and one twenty ton ca- c the latter of Vulcan design and manufacture. The Vulcan facturing Company, incidentally designed and built probably first large electric crane designed and built in the Northwest, th is in operation in a large Seattle mill. y | N.
