rank Waterhouse & Company, of Seattle, One of the World’s Greatest Shipping Firms In that attainment as second only to New York in exports and mports which Seattle has achieved as a port, the names of a few firms and individuals stand out with special prominence as prime factors in the accomplishment of this remarkable growth. Among these none has played, or plays, a more important part | than “the Waterhouse interests,” as the several activities of Frank Waterhouse & Company are known. While it is as a shipping firm 4 that this company is best known throughout and to the four corners Bs of the earth, its ramifications reach into such fields as that supplied by the wholesale handling of coal; the Vulean Manufacturing Com- ny, iron and steel fabricators; agencies for the Studebaker and ion automobiles and the Signal trucks; marine and fire insur- ance; taxicab, stevedoring, warehousing, towing and other related and subsidiary lines. N In speaking of these many interests and showing that, while _ they may appear to be unrelated and merely the accidental invest- ' ments of a financier, they are, in fact, co-related parts of one well- _ Organized company, Mr. Waterhouse, in a recent interview, said: ee “As the opportunities of a rapidly growing country presented themselves we advantaged ourselves of them in various ways. Our ships, plying the Coast and Alaskan trade, made us familiar with the Possibilities of bringing Vancouver coal to Seattle. Out of this trade frew the idea of becoming sales agents and producers, and conse- ‘quently, our coal company. “Delivery problems in the coal company suggested the need for motor trucks, and the economies of purchasing from ourselves gave us the idea of becoming sales agents for one or two truck manu- facturers. This agency has become one of the largest in the North- west, handling now both trucks and pleasure cars. In connection | with the pleasure cars we again saw a need, this time in local motor fansportation, and we capitalized it by establishing a taxicab com- ny and, later, a baggage service. x “Our shipping needs suggested opportunities also, and we organ- ' ized companies to handle the stevedore business, to build and operate | docks, to operate tugs, and to underwrite marine insurance. Re- cently we undertook to build an iron works, and have started to pub- lish a magazine—“Pacific Ports.’ The latter, though only a little over a year old, now is one of the leading foreign trade publications of the country and circulates all over the Pacific ocean. “All these organizations, with the single exception of the iron ' works, have grown, either directly or indirectly, out of our shipping ag? But it is not alone for the success attained as a commercial tion that Frank Waterhouse & Co. has achieved a reputation. its dealing with that most important material of all—the human element, its employees— the company has shown the way. To be in the employ of any of the Frank Waterhouse companies ' is a matter for both self and public congratulation. It means per- " manency of position combined with good pay, fair treatment, sym- etic understanding of individual problems, and co-operation that ‘extends from top to bottom—both ways. This is true not only of nagers, office men and women, but equally so of every one hether he wears a white collar or a jumper, does his work at a ‘desk or at the power end of a handtruck. That this human, man-to- man. treatment with equal respect from and to all ranks to and om each other makes for.loyalty and efficiency goes without saying.
