The Seattle Machine Works a Big Asset In City’s Marine Development The Seattle Machine Works was organ iued in 1899 and incorporated in the follow ing year, Their first location Was in a small shop on Jackson st. and Occidental ave. from which location they moved in 1903 to larger quarters at the foot of King *t. In 1908, their King st. quarters being no longer adequate for their increasing burtness, they negotiated a lease of a por tion of the Westerman-Timmerman prop- erty on Lander st. and East waterway, where they erected their own machine shop building, moving therein the same year Additions were bullt to the Lander st. plant from time to time until the steady growth of their business exceeded the maximum capacity of their equipment at that location, whereupon in the latter part * of 1917 they erected what ts known as their Plant No. 2, on the King County Indus trial tracts on the Duwamish waterway in Georgetown, and they: are now operating both the Lander st, and Duwamish water- way plants. Their plant No. 2 ts excep- Uonally well situated4or marine work, hav- ing & private slip from the Duwamish river and a private wharf 510 feet long for the laying up of vessels The Seattle Machine works is consid ered to have one of the largest and best equipped machine shop plants in the North- west. While conducting the business of a gen- eral machine works, they have specialized in the construction of marine engines and auxiliary machinery, building marine en- sines of from 500 to 3,000 horsepower. ri They have made an exceptional war rec ord, having built the engines for the fol- lowing United States shipping board ves- sels: “Absaroka, West Apaum, West Alrek, Jacona, Elderon, Cruso, Bobring, Bockonoff, Bonneteere, Bon Secour, Clodia and Clio,” as well as the Pacific American fisheries owned vessels, “Redwood, Fir. wood, Rosewood, Hollywood, Oakwood and Katherine D." In addition to this they have turned out a large amount of auxil- fary machinery, such as shafting, bear ings, propellers, etc, both for shipping board vessels and privately owned ships. Bince its organization the general man- agement of the business has at all times been under the direct supervision of Mr. Eric Johnson, its president and general manager, who originally started with the concern in 1899 as its general superintend- ent. Mr. Bugene L. McAllaster is vice President and engineer of the company. Mr. EB. V. Grisvard, secretary and treas- urer of the company, is also an “old timer” with the concern, having been with the company for the past 12 years. ry Sears, Roebuck & Co Order Houses, Their / One of the largest and most intel » establishments in point of rapid growth | the entire Coast is that of Bears, Roeb & Co, On February 1, 1910, this firm! tablished itself in the Pacific North with eight employes, a small line of m chandise, and 25,000 square feet of space in the Armour building, Seattle, In the fall of the same year they already found thelr quarters too small @f moved to $70 First ave, South, where had a floor space of 65,000 equare feet.
