Supervision | to Be Boost to Ring Game BY #. C, HAMILTON (United Press Staff Correspondent) TOLEDO, O., June 13.—Tex Rick- ard’s invitation to the army, navy |and ctvilian board of control for box- Ing to act as a sort of supervisor for forthcoming champtonship contest between Jew: Willard and Jack Dempsey, will have a more far-reach ing effect than appears at present. Jess Willard today sent to the board his application for the first boxer’s license of the many that will ne he a nd te. a ing with the approval of a champion the worth of the plan now being fos- |tered in a nationwide movement to| | place boxing on the highest Pond ble plane It was learned here today on the best possible authority that the am- bitious plan to place boxing under | control of a board includes the erec- tion of a club house in New York City, at a cost of about $3,000,000, to be known as the National Sporting club; the licensing of every boxer, manager and promoter, and strict supervision of every bout that Is to be held in the country. Big Effect Under the plans now ouflined, the board will investigate every applica- tion for a permit to hold a bout, and either sanction or denounce it. The he easily be seen. With the weight of men like Maj Gen. Leonard Wood, Maj. Anthony Drexel-iiddlie and others behind either a sanction or a denunciation of a fight made to any governor or mayor, probably would decide whether or not the bout would be held. Tex Rickard appreciates this fact, and has profited by it. He has asked the board to supervise the selection of a referee and to take charge of his efforts to produce the Willard- Dempsey battle. His connection with the board alone means 4 great deal | lof prestige. There is no other pro- moter in the country who wields the 7|influence Tex throw behind anything with which he is connected. Boxing will get a big boost from the efforts being devoted to its salvation by Rickard. To Take Rest Jack Kearns, manager of Demp sey, announced today that the chal lenger will do no more boxing un til Sunday. It has been decided that inasmuch as Dempeey’s con dition is first class now, there is no use of pushing boxing.
