Do you like tea? Do you prefer it black or green, large leaf or small leaf? Can you tell Japan tea from Formosa—Russian tea from that of China, India or Ceylon? In the United States we consume less than one pound of tea per capita per year as against about eight pounds per capita per year in Eng- land, seven pounds in Canada, three pounds in Russia and nearly ten pounds in Australia and New Zealand. The per capita consump- tion in this country, instead of in- creasing or even holding its own, has been going slightly down hill during the past twenty years. So has the advertising of tea. We are concerned in this because Puget Sound ports are the largest receiv- ing ports in the United States for tea. Isn’t this a good time for the large tea importers to get together and chip in, say one cent a pound, based on last year’s importations, to educate us about tea and thus stimulate a greater demand? This would provide an advertising fund of $1,027,390.00, which, properly used, would in all likelihood dou- ble the consumption of tea in this country within the next few years, and also double, and _ perhaps treble, the amount of tea imported through Puget Sound ports.
