The reverse is true. Poultrymen are making less money today at prevailing prices than during other seasons when egg prices are lower. * At this season of the year old hens are moulting. It is the exceptional flock which during this moulting period, covering approximately 90 days, produces 10 per cent of its normat egg yield. Pullets—birds raised during 19148—are not sufficiently matured to produce their normal egg yield. Moulting hens and unmatured pullets require just as much nourishing food now as when they are at their maximum egg production. There has not been found any poultry food substitute; that is, any food which, when fed to poultry in place of wholesome grains, will supply the necessary egg-producing elements. Prices of all poultry feeds are today from two to three tities as high as in pre-war times. , The cost of farm labor is about two and a half tinies imiore. It cannot, in many cases, be procured at any price within reason. The cost this season of bringing pullets—1918 hatched birds —to the laying period has been from two and a half to three times as much as in pre-war times. Notwithstanding this excessive cost of egg production, admittedly brought about by war conditions, and notwithstanding the low egg pro- duction, which always has and probably always will prevail at this season of the ygr, EGGS ARE TODAY SELLING AT ONLY ABOUT A FIFTEEN-CENT ADVANCE OVER THE PRICE AT WHICH THEY SELL AT THIS SEASON DUR- ING NORMAL TIMES. Pa Ninety per cent of the eggs produced at the present season come from pul- lets. Pullet eggs, though somewhat smaller than standard size eggs, may be bought at the present time at prices only slightly in advance over the price at which standard size eggs sell in normal times, PULLET EGGS HAVE A BETTER FLAVOR AND CONTAIN MORE NUTRITIVE VALUE THAN ANY OTHER EGGS ON THE MARKET TODAY, The foregoing accurate information as to the egg situation is offered to the consuming public by the WASHINGTON WAR EMERGENCY EGG FEDER- ATION as a part of a so-called educational egg campaign. This Federation is composed of poultry raisers of Western Washington—men and women actu- ally engaged in supplying eggs and poultry for local markets. These poultry raisers have for sometime realized the importance of placing before the housewife and the public generally facts concerning the egg in- dustry, not now generally known, nor understood. To bear the expense of this educational egg campaign, these poultry raisers have assessed themselves one cent per hen per year. From time to time additional information relative to eggs, egg prices, the food value of eggs, etc., will appear in the advertising columns of this news- paper,
