SR eg = “ eee oT For the Lack of a Nai There’s a world of war-time truth in the old maxim that says: “For the lack of a nail, the shoe was lost, For the lack of a shoe, the horse was lost, For the lack of a horse, the kingdom was lost.” The job we leave undone over here may cost a life over there. The flaw in.an axle, the crack in a shaft, the scratch in a bear- ing, may mean the death of a nation’s defender. The soldiers who are fighting for our freedom work twenty-four hours a day, and they’re on duty every day, with no pay for over- time. The least we can do is to remain steadily at our allotted tasks, doing A Full Day’s Work, Every Day A Full Week’s Work, Every Week Such service is vital in factories making war munitions. And “munitions” is a word of broad meaning. It includes everything the soldier wears, and eats, and uses, and the means of transportation as well. Remember that the missing nail may mean a lost battle. Great events hinge on small affairs. The Ohio Council of National Defense reports that 10 per cent of workers are regularly absent from their jobs. But not the loyal, thinking workers, who know that victory means liberty—while defeat means slavery, under Prussian domination, The first act of German junkers in conquered Russian territory was to reduce wages from $2.10 per day to THIRTY CENTS PER DAY—with the lash, or rope, for slackers. Workers of Seattle, stay by your jobs. Resolve that there will be no lay-offs for any cause, short of serious sickness or death in the family.
