He told her that he was not the same Bill he had been, “Tam able to do,” he said, “only about half as much work as I used to do before the war.” Mr. Bill has been very weak since he met Mr. Increased Costs, and came out second best in their famous catch-as-catch-can wrestling bout. “Why,” he said to Miss Schu- ster, “one time 50 cents could do as much as I can do now.” In short, Mr. Bill says he is only half a man at most of the tasks assigned to him these days. Our Partner, Mr. Street Car Rider, who lives out on the end of the Phinney line, found Mr. Bill’s talk very interesting, but a trifle confusing on one point, so he called on him for an explanation. What Mr. Dollar Bill Said to Mr. Street Car Rider: “Well, well, Car Rider, I did forget all about you, didn’t I? Sure, I can get you just as many car rides as ever. I seem to get all my strength, back whenever I work for you. But, do you know that when I quit working for you, and try to do a little something for your partner, Mr. Street C ar Company, this weakness of mine comes back. Curious, isn’t it? “I was out your way, the other day, and went from there to Fauntleroy to meet an appointment with a woman who had to go to the market. She said I looked awfully thin and worn. I guess I did, all right, but, say, bo, I learned something about what a power I am in your pocket. “That ride was 16.9 miles long, and good old Street Car Com- pany only nicked me a nickel for the whole thing. I am willing enough, but, say, there isn’t enough of me when I am put on that job. And that’s the whole truth about it. Itseems to me that it is up to you to help your partner out. Expect to encounter the oil sands at any minute. The Gulf Pipe Line Company has agreed to pay us $1.80 per barrel for our entire production of oil. This is an advance of 55¢ per barrel over the price paid in 1917, and an additional premium of 20¢ per barrel on 1918's price.
